Orienteering race 1:10:19 [5] *** 7.64 km (9:12 / km) +220m 8:03 / km
spiked:14/16c

Red course on the southern part of the Sebago Lake map. Very open, fast terrain. I squeeze the race between the work for the Genesis race, which happens right across the street on the Diamond Mt map. So I want to move quick and get back to work.
I move well, mess up #3, run downhill somewhat off the line and drift. The move back costs me a minute or two. The next control I inexplicably move a cliff north of the control instead of south. Must be magic vision or some. Another minute dumped.
Mistakes mostly happen here when I disregard the speed limit. I move fine from then on, somewhat slow on top of the hill, in yellow open, but not time loss.

A nice course, ok run, could be better if better warmed up and focused. But what can you say, I was running while being paid, almost.

The third map on the Genesis proved to be a tough one. I had projected a 1.40 to 2.00 winning time, the best teams had 3 hours. I worry, that some control had been eaten by immature bridle natters, but it appears it was a combination of exhaustion (the AR's were in their second day of racing) and the trickiness of the unmapped green. I will make a timed speed run while picking up the control next week.

Running 15:00 [3] 2.0 km (7:30 / km) +20m 7:09 / km

Setting the last controls for the Genesis AR. I have a mystery course. The map was found under a rock on the beach, it has 16 controls, only 6 remains, the others were probably rotten or eaten or grilled. The runners have to guess which controls are loaded and which are dummies.

Running 37:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:56 / km) +50m 4:46 / km

The "Millionth Time I run this loop' loop. Easy run, just to wake up after an easy day at home. Great light over the water. I am still somewhat Highlander slow. Need a race to get my legs back. And sleep. Lot of sleep.

Running 36:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:48 / km) +50m 4:39 / km

The "New Tire" loop. I have the maps printed for the Genesis AR at my usual print shop with the usual troubles, the machine clonks out when struggling with the complex files, a PDF makes polka-doted swamps. It is a messy but in the end it works. I have a bunch of tricks, but something seems to be very intuitive or accidental when printing these map files. Maybe it gets better once I upgrade my computer. Any G4 or G5 floating out there, not being used?

On the way back I have the rear tire checked, which leaks suspiciously. Turns out the plug they put in some time ago leaks. A new tire, sets me back some cash. At least I know I can drive over to Harriman without having to change the tire on race time.

On the other hand, the tire is cheaper than a pair of running shoes.

Orienteering 1:35:00 [4] *** 12.5 km (7:36 / km) +390m 6:34 / km
spiked:7/7c

Setting controls on two maps in Harriman. I work on moving fast through the rough terrain, the rocks, the fallen trees, the blueberries. It is a mix of strength, concentration and looking ahead to get around the worst obstacles and finding easy ground to run.

The control locations are fairly straight forward, most of them work, except one, that I adjust. On the second map I have the weird surprise of a missing streamer. It is one of the places no human seems to pass. Maybe it is a particularly fine tasting kind of surveyer's tape.

Running 36:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:48 / km) +50m 4:39 / km

The "Little out and little back" loop. Low energy slow jog. Think recovery, feel not recovery. Glad I have some Harrimaning tomorrow, putting controls for the Genesis AR. Quite some nice surprises. Meanwhile I play a Sam-goes-to-grad-school (meaning when should I sleep more?) and am unexplicably hungry (is that the burned calories from the Highlander).

One great thing: The warm fall weather. Not winter yet, like in the snow snake swarming Laramie range.

Running 37:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:56 / km) +50m 4:46 / km

The "What is this rain doing here" loop. Easy run with squeaking oozing blisters, the only serious damage to my body from the Highlander. I spend the day setting up the maps for the Genesis adventure race. Try to keep it reasonable, so that I don't have to run 20k to set up the flags. One Highlander per week is good enough.

Running 35:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:40 / km) +50m 4:31 / km

The "Wow, it was more fun to run at Silvermine" loop. Good warm weather, the legs are fine, the blister collection not. Guess I didn't push hard enough since I can still run reasonably well. I actually think doing some meet work that involved a lot of walking around and moving, I inadvertedly had some good cool down period, that helped the body to recover.
