Orienteer race (Interstate State Park) 1:31:58 [3] 7.4 km (12:26 / km) +241m 10:41 / km
shoes: Icebug Spirit-L olx

I have a new favorite Twin Cities park... even if it's technically in Wisconsin. What an amazing area; reminds me a bit of some of the better parts of Missouri with all the rock features, cliffs, etc. I wish there were some Lidar data available... we need an O map here!

Mass start, "Adventure Run". 7.4 km, orange level navigation. 1:10,000 map but from USGS and other smooshed together sources. Nicely smooshed. GPS allowed but a bad idea (I tried it at one point but it backfired).

Mass migration to Control 1, long trail and pretty much everyone jumped off the trail early but the huge features by the lake were not noticeable on the map... bridge on road was missing too.... good to get an idea for this stuff early on and in a "safe" place.
2: Decided to take the direct route, rather than the road/trail... knew it might be slower (but it could be faster) and it was definitely more interesting. Steve also took this route, we got passed by multiple people who went the other way. Very rocky, not runnable.
3 OK, trail it is then. Until trail intersection at top of hill... jumped into the woods straight for control about 200m in. These woods were GREAT and hit the clearing spot right on. Fun
4. Tall grasses, uphill, and people ahead. It reminded me of Wyoming, and wasn't too much fun really. I heard Steve say "I think I've reached max heartrate" or something like that and then didn't see him again. In retrospect, when someone says that maybe I should have turned around to make sure he was okay! but instead I thought, "oh, good".
5. Fun run through great woods, and knew that the control was in a deep reentrant, so I could just "bam, fall right in", but when I saw how steep the sides were going to be, I decided to fall early (shallower) rather than late and that was a good choice. Jim was ahead of me, went dead for the control and was confronted with the cliff, so this gave me a chance to catch up.
6. "Mountain Goat leg". Fun path down the steep reentrant. Clambering over rocks.
7-9 Everyone else took off on the trail, I decided to go through the woods although again it was not really looking faster and then I hit the trail later on. Saw Kelly a few times, stopping and carefully reading her map, not following, making sure she knew what was around. Awesome. Ran up the hill to 7, then did some downhill running practice straight to 8. Slowed down a little as I got to the control but I was pretty right on it. Kelly right behind me, so I took off to 9, knowing she'd be looking at the map for a few seconds (I hoped). 9 was short and easy.
10 Up the road, cut up the hill to the trail, trail run to 10.
11. THIS was a crazy control! Crazy fun. Top of hill, between a billion other tops of hills. Hit it fine, but there were a lot of unmapped canyons in the way. I was glad we had a USGS map, or Todd could have placed some really mean controls in here....
12. Fun fun fun, down a really long flat spur 500 meters of great woods running with handrails on both sides.
13. Started going straight for 13, got confronted with a sharp drop-off so I ran back a bit and then to the trail. I knew the trail would be fast, and figured Kelly would burn by me here so I picked up the pace, read my map for the jumping off point, and FACE PLANTED with a really hard fall that miraculously didn't hurt, broke my glasses, got my map dirty (but not ripped). And was up in 2 seconds, totally fine. Except it took a while to figure out where I was on the map, which control I was running to, which direction to hold it..... and I got passed by the white T-shirt guy. but once I started running again I was fine.
14. NP, just a short hill top
15 I messed up on this one, was going to stay North of the first hill, but was near the top so I figured I'd better peek just to make sure it wasn't already the second hill.... then somehow my map got turned around again, and I took the time to be clever and pull out my iPhone topographic GPS just to verify that I was where I thought I was..... and I got myself all messed up. Do NOT use GPS.. I started looking back at the 13/14 area on the map. After a while, I figured out what was wrong, but by this time, I ws actually South of 15...stupid stupid and Kelly and white T-shirt guy were already at 15.
16 No problem
17 No problem. Nice long trail, Kelly long gone and white Tshirt guy a little up ahead but I was a bit tired to catch him.
18. Should have been easy but I stood in the field a bit confused because it looked different, somehow...

Orienteer (Control Retrieval) 40:00 [2] 2.27 mi (17:37 / mi) +84m 15:48 / mi

Went back to pick up 15 and 16, talked with Kelly until the swamp-walk, got 15 and lost my map. Had a bit of a struggle getting back to 16. Tried to hit the small trail, but didn't realize I could have just gone NE and been funneled in. Bad memory-O. I'll have to try that exercise more often.

Burgers afterwards at Taylor's Falls. Fun way to end the weekend.

I was happy that six of the Meetuppers were able to come today; two of them really enjoyed the short course a lot (Jeff and Amy), Shelly and her sone were done after the White/Yellow course but I think they had fun.... and I never caught up with Joe and his son but will run with Joe this Wednesday so hope I'll hear how things went. It was nice to have an easy but really fun course for new people.

And very pretty too.
