Orienteering 4:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

The first segment of the CYNO Regaine near Hector, NY. I opted for 4 hours of running, then two hours rest.

Unfortunately, it was quite warm--high 70s, low 80s, with lots of exposure to the sun. I tried to run easily, and was doing fine for the first few controls, but then the heat got to me and I started fade badly. After two hours I was bonking and just looking for ways to get back intact.

My dehydration was so bad that it felt as though I had a couple of knives stuck in my back; and on any uphill, I had to stop and catch my breath.

Only managed to get four controls in those four hours. I knew my Regaine fun was pretty much over.

6 PM

Orienteering 3:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Decided to at least try the next six-hour segment, so I opted for 3 hours of rest and then three hours of run, which would be in complete darkness, but also much cooler. I just wanted to try out my new headlight and see what the woods would be like at night.

I felt much better with the colder temperatures, but was still having difficulty navigating well. Managed to finish the three-hour 'run' portion, but only snagged a couple of controls.

Good reason to call it a day and withdrew, since my legs were on the verge of continuous cramping and didn't relish the idea of another 9 hours of tromping through the woods.

Walking 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Just a quick walk before dinner--out a mile and back on East Street. Found a very worn penny on the side of the road--the eyes must not be that bad after all.

Trail Running 1:09:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:30 / mi)

Over to Kennedy Park for a run--nothing very strenuous, but I just thought it wouldn't hurt to run a little bit before the Regaine.

Today seemed to be a "See Salamander" day--there were many of them on the trails--so much so that in one flat, wet area, I had to zig and zig to avoid them all. I always like it when they are out--gives me something to think about as I plod along, other than how bad I feel. :-)

Walking 58:12 [3] 4.0 mi (14:33 / mi) +311ft 13:33 / mi

Out to Woods Pond and back, alone, in the rain, but wearing my new waterproof jacket by Rab. It uses Polartec's Neoshell, a stetchable, waterproof material that breathes better than Gore-Tex, or so they claim.

Seemed pretty comfortable, although I'm not a fan of the hood, so I just wore a baseball cap to keep the rain off my glasses. Since these normally retail for $365, I couldn't pass up one offered on eBay at $255. :-)
