I felt really good this morning, like a sub 5 pace, and was surprised and dismayed with my time. Perception is not reality (its actually often when I feel slow that I put in my best times). Perhaps I'm still recovering from COC, which was quite physical.

I've been quite a dis-organized, forgetful ditz lately; more so that usual, as I am a natural ditz. I imagine that that is a handicap in O. I wonder if there is training to correct such a handicap?

I definitely feel better than I have all summer, and think I'm running better, as this loop is longer. If I were a corporation, I could restate my earnings for the summer (after, of course, I've cashed out my own backdated options and sold out to the clueless everyman). So, in light of the illness, I am restating my times for the summer. 20% sounds fair, as everything is arbitrary, nothing matters and what if it did, you have no control, and even conscious will is demonstrably an illusion.

Note
(sick)

Come home to find not 1, but 4 separate target logos on my legs. Pretty scary. Doctor assures me that the treatment (and effectiveness thereof) of Lyme disease is independent of the dose of the pathogen. I guess we'll find out.

No symptoms (technically, the rash is a sign, not a symptom :-)). Logging this for future reference.

HR sprint test run

indicates EWT of 15:45. Will probably adjust it or start from scratch, tho.

coursesetting 5:13:00 [1]

HR farsta

all done tho may move a control after some more reflection. Map is in amazing shape for being 18 yrs old. Its in better shape than some 3 year old maps. But, its still 18 years old. Might as well write the cs notes so I don't forget.

Some areas are greener than mapped, and the visibility poorer than expected.

One clearing has had in influx of saplings in both the white and the open land that would probably be mapped with either light or med green. They are passable, but the area looks kinda different in places.

Some of the mapped rocks are smaller than the 1m standard.

One of the creeks in the area is generally mapped as uncrossable, yet is generally crossable (at least I've never hit it at a place I would describe as uncrossable).

There are bears in the park. I've never encountered any, but other orienteers have seen them.

This can be a difficult area, but I find it fun, interesting, and challenging. The penalty for losing contact can be quite severe. [It is a virtual certainty that this paragraph hits the cutting room floor].

that's a bit better. Perhaps its 'cause I'm totally stressed out about HR. I'm contemplating blowing off this saturday's planned visit so I might have better chances of a decent race at FC on sunday. I think my last race I was truly happy with was day 1 at Zermatt, or day 3 at WMOC (or the mispunch in Croatia). That's a long time in what was shaping up to be my best season of racing both technically and physically.

It just shows that when you lose focus (either due to the other goals (and execution) of travel, coursesetting, or other projects), it affects results.

The one saving grace about being below the radar is that no one is publically questioning my motivation or training during a period of lame results, as if anyone has the perrogative to do that for anyone, on or below the radar.

ribs a bit sorer than expected this morning; time still a bit slower than expected.

Is it true that you get systemically tired over a season, and just have to rest for a week or two? You hear that in baseball -- pitchers being tired at the end of the season. I've never believed it, but I suppose it is possible.

fair hill stumble

probably more like a 1.5. Started out as a 2/2.5, but quickly took it easy.

Stumble is ALL DONE :). Short 7560m, long 15850m, (shortest route as calculated by the computer). What a pleasure working with this map and terrain. I've often whined about Zherdev's veg mapping, but this seemed perfect with one exception (which may have simply been natural change). Coursesetter's notes will be short, which is always a good thing.

The veg mapping is so good that it can be used in both micro and macro decisions, and while no controls are in unpleasant veg, those who don't respect it in their routes may be ...

It was pleasant to be in the forest for 5 hours at slow speed. All sorts of wildlife -- not megafauna, but the sort that lives in small streams and mud puddles. Pretty cool stuff if you enjoy the sounds, sights, and smells of a forest ...

Now it is on to HR ...

ribs were killing me. Almost stopped after 5 minutes but toughed it out, and eventually the endorphins kicked in. It was tough out there today. For some reason, everyone else was in an extra cheery mood saying "good morning" and the like; all I could muster was a feeble wave ...

Finished design of the farsta for the saturday of the sprint series. Seems like a nice little course, tho the constraint of trying to keep it on the shortish side lead to some compromises. Wanted to do 3 loops but 2 works better for trying to keep it under 9k. It occurs to me that there is no reason people can't do it in teams of 2 if they want an even shorter run, providing they can manage the handoff of the e-card. The question is -- will be this be a registration nightmare, or can it be handled on the fly at the race site?

Anyway, off to the terrain on saturday -- hopefully it is as I remember it. It is amazing that this map is 20 years old or so now, and still basically accurate, at least the last time I set there ...
