11 AM

Running 1:39:00 [3] 15.0 km (6:36 / km) +450m 5:44 / km

Long run down the fjørd with Jenny. Views as pretty as ever and zero ice. There was even a moment where I considered taking off my jacket and running in short sleeves! That moment passed pretty quickly though...

No chance finding of my car key unfortunately.

12 PM

Running 1:05:00 [3] 11.85 km (5:29 / km)

Slept 12 hrs last night. Then an easy morning, a skjog around høiåsmarka, and the afternoon and evening at teambuilding with the football team. We tried out hand at clay-pigeon shooting...probably best we stick to football considering how successful we were!

Note

Finished with fieldwork for the week. The others have one line to measure today, but I said months ago I was unavailable today due to Tiocamp. Unfortunately the last two weeks has left me in no condition to actually go on the camp, so it'll be an easy weekend at home instead. Still sticking with my day off today though, just to make a point. (rest of the field crew agreed with my decision, but still felt bad leaving them to finish off)
4 PM

Ellipse 1:01:00 [3] 13.2 km (4:37 / km)

Dragged a bit. Luckily remembered my headphones, so could watch (or rather, listen) to TV.

Running 1:04:00 [3] 11.3 km (5:40 / km) +350m 4:54 / km

Two shorter lines in the snow today, and after 3 days on the job, the two new crew members know more about what to do, so a bit faster.
Back at the hotel before 5pm, so thought I'd see how my legs felt running. Upper body is smashed and legs are weary from all the carrying stuff through snow, but turned over alright once going.
Headed up the hill and followed my nose til I got to the ski stadium. Didn't feel like doing an out and back (ew), so chanced it down the Nordsetter road before finding some more small trails. Popped out at the skijump but resisted the urge to run up the stairs. (not hard).
Nice to get out.

Wednesday Mar 27, 2019 #

Note

11hr day. No digging in snow to get electrodes in today. Just chiseling through ice instead ;)

Tuesday Mar 26, 2019 #

Note

10hr day today.
Dodo and I went to look at the skijump after we finished in the field. Ended up walking up the 936 steps to the top. Overtook a couple of people training on the way, they didn't look so impressed as we came past in our fluoro work gear and boots :)

back on fieldwork. 12hr day.

Orienteering 1:27:00 [3] 12.0 km (7:15 / km) +400m 6:13 / km

Kvillebyns klassiska
Knew i wouldnt be going fast today but still taken back by just how empty my legs and body felt. Hamstrings were screaming from the first hill and the rest of the legs soon joined them.
Navigation was on autopilot for the most part. Routechoices were fine bar some micronaps where I'd wander offline, and once where I tried to cut the corner on a hill and ended up on top of a cliff... Only mistake of note was at #10 where I made a nice yellow level mistake on about the easiest control of the course. Which just about sums up the day. Body and brain not really present.
Kine smashed it though :)

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.6 km (6:15 / km)

Token. No warm down.

Running 39:00 [3] 7.05 km (5:32 / km) +250m 4:42 / km

Went for a run around the fortress for a change of scenery and some smoother trails. Blowing a gale, but beautiful as ever. A couple of the golf greens up there look like they need some NZ sheep to keep them trim...

Strength and Conditioning 20:00 [1]

Finished at spenst for some strength. Pretty packed but found myself a corner.

Strength and Conditioning 22:00 [2]

Back home late last night. A completely different climate in Halden than Lillehammer! (and Malta, that seems a long time ago already...)
7 PM

Football 1:31:00 [3] 10.4 km (8:45 / km)

Training match against the 15yo guys. eeeh, they're annoyingly fast and teenager cocky. Very satisfying when you stop them in their tracks, very annoying when you don't.
Played first half central mid, then second half left wing. A hell of a lot of running with not much ball on left wing. I guess that's my specialty though?

Football warm up/down 15:00 [1] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)

Wednesday Mar 20, 2019 #

Note

Another day in the field. More hiking through snow. We used an old army truck with caterpillar tracks to compress tracks in the snow for us to measure in. However, kind of ironically, it's too warm, so the snow is melting rather than hardening and compressing. Gave up due to the low quality of the data. Don't see how the ERT measurements will go any better next week to be honest.

Tuesday Mar 19, 2019 #

Note

Straight from the airport up to Lillehammer for fieldwork. Talk about sublime to ridiculous. Doing seismic surveys in 1.5m of snow...
No training today, lots of trudging around in snow though. (snjog?)

Orienteering 18:05 [4] 3.78 km (4:47 / km) +80m 4:20 / km

Moc stage 3
More fun alleyway stuff over in Il-Birgu. Man it feels good to be sprint orienteering again! Unfortunately, today I completely bailed over on my ankle entering #2, which crushed any chance of a full-speed race. Was back running a decent speed by #5, but lost significant time on 2,3&4. In any case it was cool, having to keep tight control on where and when to turn. I missed my turn on #7, and fell into the classic mistake (which many learnt yesterday), of reading a nice wide staircase on the map when in reality it's a tiny twisting staircase full of people. Dropped 20s on #7 because of this, but can't really complain as I avoided similar slip-ups yesterday (Natalia lost 30s in a never-ending wheel-chair ramp to heaven).
Feeling pretty tired in the legs today, and am lacking that kick at the end. Both yesterday and today Kirsten put a couple of seconds into me in the last legs.

Orienteering 21:40 [4] 4.2 km (5:10 / km) +150m 4:23 / km

MOC stage 2.
Fun orienteering around the alleyways of Bormla. Maybe not much routechoice as could have been set, but eh, was pretty sweet. A very unfortunate (for everyone) printing error which meant the only valid route on 4-5 was covered by the line. Eventually this leg was taken out of the results. And even more unfortunate (for me) was a brain explosion that saw me navigate 11-14, then half way to 13 before realising I was doing the loop the wrong way :( I corrected, but blew 1.5mins plus a bit as my mistake meant that I did a solid climb through #14, then all the way back down the hill to #12, and back up again to #13...idiot.

Otherwise, felt good in the legs (though starting to regret keeping up with Øystein and Erik on wednesday), and was feeling good in the nav until my brain explosion.
On the downside, there went my chance of prizemoney for the weekend, on the upside, at least it wasn't the WRE!

Running 24:45 [2] 4.0 km (6:11 / km) +170m 5:06 / km

Long warm-down, first with Kirsten and Mary, then with Tess. Good chat.

Orienteering 29:45 [4] 3.75 km (7:56 / km)

MOC stage 1 in Buskkett Gardens.
Today didn't count in the overall standings, so most taking it easy. Thought I was too, but we know I don't fully understand that term. So my record of winning/podiuming in races that don't matter continues haha.
Fun area, map etc on standard with a wellington event, which could explain things. ;) Plenty of uncrossable walls to work around (or in the case of many of the masters, fearlessly jump off!!). A large hill with ruins on top and a sketchy as descent zigzaggin through green and cliffs on tiny precipitous paths. I thought is was fun, but I have my mum's blood and lack of self-preservation on downhills ;)

Running 1:20:00 [3] 14.5 km (5:31 / km) +550m 4:38 / km

Run along the coast of Gozo with Øystein and Erik. Yannick with us for the first bit, but then he ditched us to run faster. Beautiful coastline but tough work with the wind. Honest pace keeping up with the guys, but plenty of photo stops for me to catch my breath ;)

Running 35:00 [2]

Evening jog close to the city. Coastal strip that the army use for training. I assume not tonight though, as it was dog walker central. Let the boys go ahead so I could cruise my own slow pace.

Note
(rest day)

Got the sniffles and a tickle in the throat, and travelling tomorrow, so thought I'd give running in the cold a miss today.

Went to the Dr yesterday to get my mandatory Dr certificate for the Italian o federation. Saw a different gp from usual. after reading my notes and listening to me, he had to go through and ask my normal GP if I truely was OK to be running and racing. Haha. Easy to forget how ridiculous my condition was, and recovery has been.

Strength and Conditioning 58:00 [1]

Eva is back, strength holiday is over. Some new exercises in there, including one where you lie on your side with legs and arms extended, then lift said legs and arms. I couldn't do it. Not least cos I was giggling too hard. All I could think of was that we all looked like fish out of water struggling to breath. Or like those stupid singing trout door bell things.
Got my giggles under control by the end of the session.

No snow to report. Probably a good thing as we were inside.
8 PM

Football 1:01:00 [2] 7.0 km (8:43 / km)

Skipped the first half hour so I had more rest after strength.coach and team said that made them happy, as I wasn't there for them to compare against on the shuttle runs. ;)
Mostly possession andgames tonight.
No snow on the pitch. Piles of it at the side though. And the ball just skidded everywhere on the skiddy surface.

Running long 1:32:00 [3] 14.75 km (6:14 / km) +370m 5:33 / km

Post hyttevakt short-longrun. Nice to get out in the snow nd sun after being cooped up all day watching other people enjoy the stunning weather.
Started at the boomgate and did a kind of figure 8. first to the west of høiås, then round stangås. Very nice. Stomach was a bit grumpy, definitely not due to waffle consumption.

Running warm up/down 22:00 [2] 3.7 km (5:57 / km)

Orienteering 24:35 [4] 2.95 km (8:20 / km)

The Oslo crowd came down the coast for a training day away from the Oslo snow. So of course it snowed heavily overnight. Haha. But then, jokes on me, the one who hasn't grown up running in snow. Ha. I'm hopeless at estimating, but I'd say 20ish cm of fresh loose snow in the terrain?

2x short distances. Mass start with a good group of girls. Felt how heavy my legs were as soon as we hit the terrain and I lost the group of Kine, Silje, Mariann halfway to the first control. Solo effort from there on, and no helpful trails through the fresh snow. Came into the 3rd to last just behind Kine and silje, but dont think that meant anything with the gaffling. Then I had an extra control, so well back at the finish.

Orienteering 22:03 [4] 2.85 km (7:44 / km)

Was last of the group back on #1, so minimal rest before #2. Stuck on the back/in the tracks of the mini train almost to #1 this time. Has Siri behind at #3 but she snow plowed away to #4.

All in all happy with the session. Wasn't physically on form but pushed as I could, and navigationally I was on point, aside from a glip on the last control on the first loop.

Hopefully T-dawg is satisfied with my snow report? Can also report it was fluffy and cold, and decent snowball forming conditions.

Didn't fancy running in the sleet/snow so headed to the gym. Kept myself entertained by watching the car-park inspector driving around. He actually gave the car parked right outside a ticket. So that was exciting. Disappointingly I finished my session before the culprit came back, so didn't get to see their reaction.

Running from home as on høiåsvakt this week. Dodged the worst of the rain, but was wet enough with all the left over snow-slush. Not as bad as up at høiås though. That, and the massive downpour of rain, meant we had about 20 people at høiås the whole evening...

Running warm up/down 16:00 [2] 2.55 km (6:16 / km)

WU and some drills

Running 24:53 [4] 6.6 km (3:46 / km)

Club intervals at the track 2x1500, 2x1000, 2x800m

Really struggled for pacing tonight. Was kind of swapping the lead each interval with Kjetil, with Jim doing his usual and gliding effortlessly past on the last lap of each interval. When I was ahead though, the first lap was always too fast but when Kjetil was ahead it felt just a teensy bit too slow. I dunno. Of course, the best pacing was when I forgot the others and my watch and just ran. Simple eh?
Having said that, the effort seemed high but the times a bit slow tonight. Guessing it's the weekend still in the legs. Or the fact that I was regretting my afternoon coffee already after the first interval...

Orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 8.0 km (8:45 / km) +300m 7:22 / km

Agreed with Bodil to do an old training from December on Thuletjern this morning. Snow arrived overnight but I sucked it up and headed out anyway.
No Bodil by the time I started, but figured she must be delayed with dropping the boys off, so headed off.
Absolutely beautiful to be alone in the silent snowy forest! The session was short intervals but I just ran it as a middle. Very slowly. Partly due to the snow, part due to the weekend and part due to starting in the technical slope, with no tapes. Wasn't much more than a walk-jog for much of it. I thought things would speed up once out of the slope, but it was wet, cold and tough going through the snow laden undergrowth. Cut the course at #13 after a couple of controls where my lower legs were painfully cold and my concentration was slipping. Happy to get out and enjoy the forest though.

Bodil arrived as I was getting changed. Turned out a car had rear-ended her (or rather, the car behind her and then her) in the dodgy as driving conditions, delaying her 1.5hrs and leaving her car without a rear panel :(

Strength and Conditioning 50:00 [1]

Today I had to lead club strength. Good god, it was terrifying. Definitely don't have time to sing along to the soundtrack when you're busy trying to remember what the next exercise is!
I'm sure everyone appreciated doing the exercises a little slower and with slightly longer breaks though ;)

Note

Skipped football training. Smart.

Running warm up/down 27:30 [2] 4.8 km (5:44 / km)

Orienteering race 49:30 [4] 9.35 km (5:18 / km) +150m 4:54 / km

Sverigepremiaren Stafett
2nd leg with Kine on 1st and Hedda on 3rd.
Headed out in 12th spot after Kine got caught out by the organisers putting out 111 and 110 in the opposite places from where they should have been. Unfortunately 110 was a gaffled control in the women's relay, so roughly 1/3 of the teams got screwed over on 1st leg...the controls were set right by the time 2nd and 3rd legs got to it.

Anyway. I got sent out with Jarla on my tail and a few teams in the minute or two infront. Jarla stayed 3 steps behind me for the first 3 controls before coming past on the track to 4. We took a different route in to 4 and on to 5, but then I went past her on the gaffled #6, never to be seen again ;) Much like yesterday I felt a really nice flow going in the sand-dunes. The topography made sense and I felt for the most part I was picking the right lines through the terrain. Was to-ing and fro-ing a bit with Vendula Horcickova, until she had a short split at the far end of the course. Caught up again on the long leg back up toward the coast, only to lose 20s on the next split and a compounding 20-30 by not spotting the best route through the baches (sorry, summer houses) on the next leg.
A fast final loop near the arena, where IFK got back past on another short split (grrr), and into the hand-over in 5th place, 1.30 back from 2nd.
Hedda had a great run on last leg to bring us back in 7th.

Very very surprised that the relay hasn't been invalidated due to the mixed up controls though. The only reason I can think of is if nobody actually put in an official protest? And the only reason I can think of for nobody doing that is that everyone thought it was so obvious that it didn't need a protest? I dunno.
All in all, Lidingo were deserved winners, the 3 of us had good runs (Kine up until that control anyway), and the weekend was great fun.
But. I'm disappointed that having a result list seems more important than having a fair race. Kind of expect it, and will deal with it, in small-race NZ or Aus, but not the opening event of the Swedish season.

Running warm up/down 33:20 [2] 6.3 km (5:17 / km)

WU to the arena from our airbnb, and on toward the start. A bit stressed as I just took Kine's verbal directions, but saw no traffic until I was 100m from the arena. WD back home after, less stressful.

Running 29:30 [4] 5.1 km (5:47 / km) +100m 5:16 / km

Sverigepremiaren middle. Back to the sanddunes of Åhus :) Feels a bit like home away from home, although the undergrowth is different from our dunes.

Nice course, in and out of open dunes and the forest. A bit of open-sand running, just to really drain the legs. I started out nice and smooth.the junior girl who had the same 2-3-4 was running faster than me, but I had nicer lines so was staying just ahead. Until the entry to #4 where I slowed down to check my map and boom, went over on my R ankle again. F#%! Hobbled it off to #5 and got back into things. Had a slip in concentration heading into the vaguer stuff at #9 though and lost 1min as I hesitated and ummed and erred. silly stuff really. Brain fart. From there on it was back into the zone and smooth again.
Happy with my run bar #9. Surprised to be 4mins back to be honest. But oh well, others have had good winter training too!

Orienteering 59:50 [2] 6.9 km (8:40 / km) +250m 7:20 / km

Tio training with 80 odd other girls.
Cruised at the back with the other Norgies. Kine can't complain at my cruise pace this time as I was behind her for the most part, and then even cut out a couple of controls while she did the whole course. Slacking off like a boss ;)

Interesting terrain again. Was taking a fair bit for me to understand the mapping of the rocks (only the BIG ones), and the knolls (could be very very small and vague). Ended up catching Hedda, who had cut more controls than me, and Kajsa, who had run the whole thing. So had a HSK train into the finish (about 15mins after the leaders but jaja)

Orienteering 58:15 [3] 8.1 km (7:11 / km) +250m 6:14 / km

Sverigepremiaren Night

Was to take this at an easy pace, with Kine threatening to pull me back in the mass-start. Which is hilarious seen as she's usually first at the start post ;) But I did as I was told and jogged off in the start. Unfortunately this was not slow enough, and I lost Kine on the first hill. Oops.
I kept holding back though, yet found myself in the lead bunch (it was a big bunch) at #2, after the lead train went on a little detour to completely the wrong hillside. Also close to the lead at #3 after I went around the track, while the pack cut through the very stoney terrain.
But after that I got well dropped. 3/4 of the field seemed to have the other butterfly from me at #4, so was easier to go my own pace and take it easy physically. Especially when I couldn't find #5...ddn't understand the map at all. Fortunately, the lead train that was on the longer butterfly then came through and showed me the control. From there all the way through to the 3rd last control I was on my own, holding a steady pace and keeping my HR in check. Happy with my night navigation, hitting every control or at least knowing which way I had to go when I wasn't hitting it.
Then at the final pivot, a bunch of girls appeared around me from nowhere. They were definitely ahead of me before that, so must have made a significant mistake on the last butterfly.
So I'll admit that I raced the last 2 controls ;) After all, you don't get relay finishing practice that often. Got the last two cleanly, trusting my own lines and navigation. Finished 2nd of the pack a couple of seconds behind Alexandra Hornik (she had SI air...just saying ;)
