Gentle ride to Montague, with a detour out to the end of Wills Ferry Road, never been there. Body pretty sore from yesterday, including right shoulder I landed on once, but back doesn't seem to be among the wounded parts.

Yesterday seems to have turned out just about right. My navigation was perfect, the company was excellent, but it is also very clear that I have no aspiration to do any more competitive orienteering. And that seems just fine. And good to finish up with a Billygoat.

Billygoat at Townsend. Had a nice walk around the course with Charlie, lots of good conversation, occasionally even about where we were going. No mistakes. Back was mostly OK, despite about a dozen falls, but legs very tired and butt and hamstrings rather sore. But could have been much worse.

I haven't really though much about the course design, but once aspect of the course deserves mention, and that is the placement of the controls. Excellent job by Alex (and Ed checking?). Nothing bogus, nothing vague, just nice distinct points. The way it ought to be.

And a very nice ride over and back with Phil, plus a fine visit from Dave Pruden last night. So much to be thankful for.

My sense is that my orienteering days are (about) over, though Phil is not at all convinced. :-)

And of course not a day to totally ignore my current pastime (which I am not at all skilled at, but enjoying), along the way I tuned into several black-and-white warblers, ovenbirds, chipping sparrows, a wood thrush, and a couple of towhees. Better than I expected for not paying attention.

Up to Montague, not much zip, but not trying too hard either.

Note

Regarding this, just one of a number of "discussions" over the years that have made me wonder about the mental health of some folks in this sport. Fortunately they are well outnumbered by some very fine folks.

Leverett loop, counter-clockwise. First day in a while with dry roads, although still cool, cloudy, and breezy. But needed to get out and do something.
