trail running 46:48 [3]
weight:132lbs shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Out the ridge trail to Sachem Head and back. Legs were dead at the beginning but a good bit better after 15 minutes. Nice day, nice run.

Looking at yesterday's splits, I sure faded at the end, losing a bunch of time on the last little loop. Lacking in willpower.

Another conclusion from the weekend is that the big dogs were on the Red course. I hadn't realized that by running the Blue I was ducking the competition.

Day 2, this time at Wolf's Den, a map I've run on a couple of times 3 or 4 years ago. Still some areas of mountain laurel, but the white woods were much nicer, and overall a much more enjoyable course, this one set by Charlie with vetting by JJ. Thanks guys.

I had a decent run, though I was very tired, didn't really have good legs, and was struggling a lot, especially in the second half (I'll be curious to see if the splits bear this out). Had a stone or something in one shoe right under my arch for about the last 20 minutes, couldn't get it relocated, didn't feel like stopping, but no damage done. A couple of small mistakes, no more than a minute each. Routes/comments.

Best today was Swampfox, nice to see him have a good run after his travails at the Pig and yesterday. It ain't fun when your legs crap out on you. He won handily, about 85 minutes. Then Eddie, Clem, Kenny in the mid to upper 90s, Joe at 100. So I wasn't as far back as I thought I might be. It felt like I could have been 5 minutes faster on a better day, but that may well be just wishful thinking.

But overall a surprisingly good weekend considering how I've been feeling this week. Though my legs are real tired now.

orienteering 59:04 [3] 5.6 km (10:33 / km) +574ft 9:07 / km
weight:133.5lbs shoes: new Integrators

NEOC A meet at Wells SP in Sturbridge. I ran at Wells a bunch of times in the late 70s on a black and white map, and then for an A meet on a color map in 1985, but not since then. I had memories of some crappy woods (mainly mountain laurel) but also some nice forest, and my kilometer times back in '85 were about 7:30. What surprised me today was that we used some new terrain to the NE of the old map (controls 1-11) and just 10-20% of the terrain on the old map. If the whole area was remapped, then a lot of it wasn't used. One thing that was consistent between today's map and the old ones was the imagination that went into it, particularly with relation to the green, which seemed more a reflection of the color of trees than the runnability. Just so you don't think I'm picking on the mapping of the green, there was some interesting mapping of the contours and the rocks, too, and, well, not to leave them out, the man-made features and the water too. The mapping of the yellow seemed ok.

Slowly feeling better, I guess, at least I'm eating more. Had a strange combination today, feeling light on my feet (legs felt good and it was cold day), but also not much energy. So I walked up all the hills. At least I wasn't making mistakes of any consequence. If you're going slow enough, the orienteering is usually pretty easy. Routes/comments.

Thermometer said 44F, but it felt much colder. Wore an extra long-sleeve shirt and was still cold, and very cold afterwards.

12.5 km tomorrow, yummy. Will try to go for 2 in a row over Swampfox, though he's getting old and is pretty easy to beat these days. Maybe I should let him beat me tomorrow, just to give him a morale boost?

Doing a little better but digestive system is still screwed up. An easy run, didn't have much energy, not particularly looking forward to orienteering this weekend. But maybe I'll get a sudden burst of energy -- one can always hope.

Something disagreed with my digestive system yesterday. A little breakfast this morning was the first food I kept down in 24 hours....

13 hills loop, or maybe I should call it the 13 flats loop, since that's what it is in relation to last weekend. Legs not too bad, but insides rumbling.
