Arrived early to help set up. Lots of others there so that was good. A little drizzle made things for set up annoying. With no newcomers to help I went out earlier than usual.
S-1 Just escaping from the Start triangle was a challenge and i didn't see the simple route choice of track behind the start triangle so bush bashed after going along main track for about 40m. The apparent OOB was also confusing. Looking for w/c and then I was OK, albeit in thick green; bash, bash ahh track beside the high fence so good - just caught a little in the sinking sand. No nav until leaving corner of OOB fence. Rest was fine - just the simple stuff was a challenge (more of that to come!).
1-2 fine
2-3 SE bearing, fine, first branch of w/c, so will need to go to second but so many deep w/c gullies; could see the large mound but not fit the control to it. Eventually saw CM looking purposeful and guessed it was control.
3-4 Chosen straight line route good
4-5 So the choices are go out to boring tracks after following w/c or just keep following w/c. Now it was well within dark green but usually there is a way and for parts there was but I got a bit disorientated and needed to pull towards the w/c until track crossed. Then of course green disappeared and it was fine. No problems in circle.
5-6 no problems
6-7ticked off features and had no issues.
7-8 Looong leg but with definite markers. Crossed minor track and arrived at major track. Elected to go right to minor track which was correct decision. Followed to T intersection, which never came (confirmed by others too) but yes well there was quite a sharp LH turn and then a w/c crossing so I guessed where I was and helped CM to assess she had drifted WAY to the right. So headed SE and came across a majorish track (and saw others on it) but wasn't sure it was that major track so continued SE but pushed about by vegetation. Could hear road traffic "in front of me" which was good as I spent quite some time in dense dense green which always gave the promise of a w/c but didn't deliver. Decided to head South bail out option and on doing so found a firm single track which seemed to go in the right direction. And it took me straight to the control. Too much bush bashing, not careful enough with direction but not helped by no sun. All my doing.
8-9 straight forward
9-10 Twisted around again - found this difficult - brain fade.
10-F Even struggled with this - due to a very high fence and machinery. Eventually found it.
F-Download. Well about 8 of us got lost leaving the F - just wanted to wander alongside the fence. Switched off and was going S instead of E. All the easy stuff !!!
So in looking at how many controls I spiked it bears NO relation to time or result. In fact time lost was mostly due to absolutely wretched route choice and refusal to use tracks.
Really enjoyed the course and the area; nice control placement and tough course setting. Well done to LH - fantastic first time setting - worthy of 3 stars! (the courses, not me - I was a dim 1/2 star - I relocated well and when I was in the wrong place I knew where I was - except going to and from the Start and Finish)
