CIAO !!!
so we have been out of reach for a while but we have finally found a computer. We are currently in a small town outside Asiago and are loving the mountains and the orienteering.

We have found the terrain to be pretty techinical but quite nice. nothing really steep yet but definatly physical.

today we did a long race at Barricatta which is where bridget ran the Trentino champs 2 weeks ago. Very nice area and lots of cool cows.

Note

tomorrow we are off to primeiro for a day trip to see the town and the valley where JWOC will be.

SPRINT TRAINING IN VENICE|!!!
this was nuts!!! so many people to run into and not the mention deadly umbrellas that poked our eyes out.

so much fun, i think we all really enjoyed this and the 4 gelati icecreams we had.

excellent day

orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Today bridget did the Long distance event for the Italian Jwoc trials. It was a bit of a f***k up but luckily every one else did worse then her. One to watch out for is the Italian girl called Nicole. She lives in the Premiero area and is quite quick in her home terrain. Here is the map from today and where Bridget Went.

On the map a major track looks like this

while a smaller track may look like this but this is a logging track, tracks that are small walking tracks could be marked the same on the map. sometimes these tracks just dissapear and are just patches or grass that begin again later. this i found the problem on the course as i would run over these and get lost.

ON a side note, we currently have 2 (possibly 3) other Aussies in Europe and waiting for the rest of the team to come on friday. Callum is in Trento not far from the Jwoc area and Krystal is in England. Sarah may also be in england right now as well, but her where abouts are unknown.?? MIA
Most of the team are heading off this week and will meet in Venice on Friday for the Beginning of the camp.

Krystal:wow making my first post on this log. well i being krystal just got to london at around midnight last night where i am staying with someone and training with them until the 26th. but yeh.. i really dont know what to write...

Bridget: Jutta and I went hiking yesterday in Innsbruck. We climbed to about the same height as the Long map. there is still a bit of snow up there and jutta reckons there will be some snow on the long map when we are running there. (there is still a metre of snow on the map) So the long day should be a pretty nice one if the weather is good, maybe around 15-20 degrees.
its getting pretty hot here as well. maybe around 25-30 degrees each day. maybe a little hotter.
Jutta and i also did some orienteering on a map near her apartment. Which way would you go from 5-6?

Italian selection trials this weekend, so it will be good to see how i go against them on their own terrain.
ciao for now!

Note

only 2 weeks until jwoc! that´s all i wanted to post on here. i was trying to think of something inspirational to write on here but im a little tired as well and can´t think.

so here is a thought from oscar: Quote by winston churchill "if you're going through hell . . . aka running up an italian mountain in jwoc. . . . don't stop to admire the scenery. . . .or the top 10 talent . . .keep running." slighly altered from the original quote lol

and here are some motivational posters to help you with your training (or maybe just a laugh to give you a break from studying)

Hints from an inside source about the JWOC ( and by inside i mean simo ahah)
sprint: it is really hard to figure out which way you can go and pass through alley ways because alot of the area is out of bounds. he reckons the best place to end it would be in the centre of town near the fountain and since there is climb it will go up into the fields south of the town that connect the two towns togethor.
middle: where i have set the course seems like the most likely area. the first hill controls1-4 is completly different to the end of the course. here it is very steep and hard to run through, there are alot of gullies to make parralell errors going down the slope , so be careful. the second bit of the course where alll the rocks are this is completly different to anything in this valley.it is apparently one of the most technical bits in italy. its is basically just rock but good visibility and running is ok. but just check your compass.
Long: this is a guide to where he thinks the course will go (on the pictures below) the top part of the map is quite flat and easy and there might be a connecting long leg to the bottom of the map where it is steep and technical with lots of rocks. finish could be near the cable car entrances.

According to locals: the area we ran on today is similar to the maps in the valley of San Martino di castrozza. The only difference is that the runnability is way better. more pine trees with soft pine needles on the ground and less soft icky dead leaves.
Another thing is that right now on the long distance map there is still a metre and a half of snow. so be prepared that it will be cold there. apparently there are lots of tracks on the map and they are good hand rails for contouring around hills. the tracks are sometimes hard to see they look pretty much like the rest of the ground but there is maybe a slight depression in the ground to indicate a track. when going to a control that has a route contouring around a hill, go down to a track and then run back up, you will actually save climbing avoiding little valleys and creeks, the creeks are really really steep and quite slow to run in because they are wet and marshy.
Learn how to zig zag down hills, LIke almost vertical hills and the best idea to get up really steep hills is to walk but take bigger strides.. also using your hands to grab onto things to pull you up because the ground is slippery.
what else... techinically its all very simple and straight forward, maybe the jwoc maps will be more technical, its basically the running down the hill contorls and picking the best route choice for your capabilities.
