Orienteering 1:34:18 [3] 2.94 mi (32:05 / mi)

US Masters at Bigelow Hollow, SP, Union CT, Brown Y, 3.6k, 11c.

Simply awful day - striking mental absence of application of about everything.
In retrospect, I just wasn't looking at the map and wasn't seeing the terrain. Too much of a hurry - this has been the issue for the past few months (largely for sale of boat but also back-related issue) & extended to orienteering, at least Sunday.

Eg, #1 - went direct enough, got to the knoll and was looking for a flag at the tiny spur assoc. with it or along one side of the knoll - after maybe 75", I looked again at the description, duh, boulder!, of course saw it immediately and went to the flag on the opposite side.

To #2, went to right of the cliffs (I believe) - they weren't really outstanding to my eyesight but the contours were steep, then across the reentrant, down the spur. I was prepared to turn to the left, looked to the right, didn't see anything that appeared open enough to contain two small marshes, went left for quite a ways - no flag - did see another marsh - did I get to the one way more to the S? Not sure. Finally, up and back and beyond where I went L and there it was, some minutes later.

#3 went the stream route, did not see the path option (again tunnel vision) - went to open marsh, finally entered the woods & "stumbled" upon the path. OK fm there.

#4 Got thru green ok due east of flag but not sure where I was when out. Went down the open slope but not picking up anything for a positive ID - esp the two big boulders! Saw a big boulder eventually about straight ahead, got there, saw a cliff opening up to L, got to the base (it must have been 3.5m) - no flag but a trail (surprise). Then relocated and went along the trail and up a few tiring contours to the flag.

#5 - still having fun and about to have even more...this next is pure conjecture...took this little trail fm #4 to where it turned to right, went maybe 25 m, set my compass for flag, went that way (sort of nondescript green), went to contour drop-off but no cliff or flag. Puzzled, frazzled. Eventually, did same again, repeating same assumption but went further north and a bit east. Had seen one guy fly by who went down - was he brown...? A bit later saw a lady punching at a flag she said was a rock cluster. I had only 2 such clusters in my "vision" - one right by the flag, one SE of the flag a short distance. It never occurred to me it could be the one to the SE of the numeral "5" on the map. So my third plan was to go more or less direct west back to the trail & rethink fm there as it crossed a knoll. Headed that way, lo & behold, a wall of jugs, a 1 m rock face and a flag with the #160. Hmm. Punch & "go". Only much later, was I able surmise what had happened when distractions faded.

#6 ok enough except that didn't feel I followed the mt. laurel 'white path' leading to the big cliff (my route choice) but ok to the point and ok to the rest of the course. Confused abut the symbol for #10 tho not a time loser.
Totaled maybe 18' mistakes.

Fell twice in the testing, tiring laurel, the second time hard.

Possibly the worst A meet day I've had tho there have been some others but beyond ready memory range.

Watch stopped around 17' so no gpx file. Borrowed Charlie's distance...

Driving home, the inside of my left knee began to hurt with exquisite point tenderness about size of a thumb print just below joint line. By the time the drive was over, I was limping. By 1am, I was up for ice and tylenol. Now, sore & stiff, esp if I don't move about. Can weight bear w/o pain - maybe just a contusion, sure is tender.

Fun to drive down with Ernst - fun to see all the old faces/friends. The NEOC 50th dinner at the F&G club was excellent.

Good map, good meet (but a bit too much of that southern NE laurel Sunday!). I told Trish Underwood I helped make the map. She looked at me with a puzzled expression. I reminded her that I introduced her to Roger c. 1981 & hence eventually Carl's ability to make the map...

Orienteering 1:04:19 [3] 2.9 mi (22:11 / mi)

US Masters' O meet, Bigelow Hollow SP
Brown Y, 3.7k, 7c

Clear, sunny, chilly - we did spend most of the day in the shade of trees however.

This felt like a good "run" but the time didn't support that. #1 was a bit unfocused but also "forgiving" with the path/stream approach. Only on #2 did I flounder some, having lost map contact maybe 3/4ths of the way along the leg. I went straight but in hindsight, climbing on the path then descending to the turn and carrying on to the stream at the base of the contours would have made a bit more than half the leg with no mental effort other than planning ahead. I had counted on spotting the two final cliffs about 200m before the flag but never did.

#4 & #5 maybe 30" each at most.

Method of moving forward is earnest walking interspersed with short jogs. Splits show I'm going slower than I'd like these days.
