Orienteering 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

White course set-up for some scouts & other kids that came. All had a great time, not sure what was best: woods, Sandbox or sweets. The few moms that escorted said they'd be back in the future. Fun to see those who've never seen a control, control card, punch etc. be excited. Hilary, Barbara & Martin picked up the controls. Was thinking of a pm run but got involved in house work & now it's snowing- outside enough for the day.

Map.

Family affair

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.5 mi (29:59 / mi)

Went out in spite. Perennial softie - anyway, snow coming down made it new-novel. Hunter's truck there from am, I think.... Wrote down the plate #.

Walking 14:00 [1] 0.5 mi (27:59 / mi)

First snow, blue dome crystal clear morning with decent wind chill.
Yet another mouse out of house.

Walking 19:00 [1] 0.7 mi (27:08 / mi)

DP - cold, penetrating rain best experienced from under an umbrella.
No "Got Snow" this fall! - how nice.

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [2]

Rain never stopped - this disinclined wimp did not venture out at noon (other than to go to the Bow library). At 45F, a cold & drear Oct/Nov rain is colder than a 25F January blue-sky day.

At the TI, the machines were a'whirrin', so it was much warmer. Did the 30'
regimen to stop & go lights. Beth showed up (planned "date"). We were even side-by-side once before I left her to her ways.

Came home, Z & M knew other than to pester.

Trail/woods running 38:00 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) 3.3 mi (11:31 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

Nottingcook Bog Meadow loop to iron out kinks/cramps for some reason...too much sitting/chill perhaps. Such a nice contrast to austere Atlantic seashore on a gray October morning. Got feet totally wet trying to get around a flooded cart track. Tired.

Note

Boat delivery with Hans. Forecast for 30 kts NW proved true. Boisterous sail, especially across Casco. Cold clear night under the Milky Way. Arrived Portsmouth before dawn. Scotch, conversation, a nap & away. Hans proved a staunch shipmate! - lots of O chat etc when conditions allowed.

Chasing the sunset off Cape Elizabeth

The West was getting out of gold,
Soon there'd be nothing but cold.

But out of sight
Comes the starry night.

Indeed the cycle plays
In countless days.

Road running 40:30 [0] 3.98 mi (10:11 / mi) +26m 9:59 / mi

Lyman's Stone's Point Road. Out & back to guarantee return time to meet Hans & Lena. Nary a car on the road...lovely views of the river.

Orienteering race 1:24:54 [3] 8.92 km (9:31 / km) +192m 8:35 / km

US champs long. Was the very last starter along with Barb Bryant (Isabel, too) and Mike ? . Was ready to go! but alas, the right lens of my glasses decided it was time to jump ship - not a minute into the run. Most disconcerting. Wasn't the situation where it could be popped back in as the screw had backed out & frame was unstable on that side. So, in an instant, went from highly motivated to approaching that of the three blind mice syndrome. Found the lens, stuffed it in pants pocket & cont'd with mixed feelings. Decided I 'd best do the whole course, call it a workout. After some minutes, I adjusted reasonably well, could generally see what needed to be seen but the blurriness remained distracting. Also, noted the potential scratchiness of the forest in a way I had not w/ 2 lenses. Timidly crossed streams so ass (sic) to not get feet wet....

Not enamored with the amount of path running demanded of such a place, 2/3rds path running? That said, it was an excellent opportunity to orient map just so - so when one got to a complex intersection, little time was spent figuring which way to turn. Excellently mapped detail. Vladimir Zherdev & Alexey Zuev (Bear Brook) are good mappers to hire. At one point in time, they were both going to map BB.

Great 3 days of O in any event. Tremendous amount of work w/ 3 different maps, S/Fs etc. Interesting but tiring metro Boston commuting from southern NH...easier each day, however.
