Orienteering race 26:04 intensity: (20:04 @3) + (6:00 @4) 2.6 km (10:02 / km) +90m 8:33 / km

CSU intermediates at Pine Hill. Brisk, sunny but spent most of day in shadow. About a B run. Very much an amateur on way to first control - lost maybe 90", maybe even 2'. Over ran 3, lost maybe 45".Went left on 6, thru start and finish, stopped one reent early, finally saw the rather lg RF I was looking at on the map & proceeded on. Was with Jeff S and PG came along. Followed them to last control, PG did not see it on map, finished & retrieved it, still way ahead. Not enough zip.... Walk to town/lunch with Phil, found a nice bakery, had an excellent sandwich. We both evidentally are ham & cheese on rye types.

The lineup Saturday, Joe being the most likely...

Larry and Sara Mae spent the entire day in the shade, warming up for the winter ski season no doubt

Jim whiling away the hours between runs

Orienteering 32:04 intensity: (22:04 @3) + (10:00 @4) 3.1 km (10:21 / km) +105m 8:51 / km

Finals, intermediate. A 'B' run. Reasonable thru #7. Eight somehow got to left & lost maybe 45". Enroute nine saw a pond that I did not see on map (& did not notice open marsh til after) so was instilled with considerable doubt. Few others I knew around so that helped. #10 went basically straight & managed to read rock faces wrong, came out on spur 60m wnw - saw lg bldr in distance & figured it out. Running with Bob Dangel on several of these controls. #11 well tucked in. #12 did not stay up high, must have lost 90" to PG's split - haven't looked. 13-4 with Bob. 3rd M60 after PG & Jeff.

Walking 14:00 [1] 0.4 mi (34:59 / mi)

AM DP, raw & windy in the Sandbox. Another A meet tomorrow!

Road/trail 25:00 [2] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Slow stuff @ BHS after work. Chilly/windy. Nice colors still. All fields being used. A football game at 7p under lights....

West Point camping by Popolopen, April, '08 (unjust wistfulness, perhaps)

Walking 52:43 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (22:43 @3) 5.4 mi (9:46 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Luti 5, CW for "maintenance." The threat of rain - had rained earlier but sun came out, saw my shadow. Tired, tired. Stretched right ham 3x. SloGo w/o any one to blame but myself. Not 20' after I was inside, it blew & poured for a short while.

Road/trail 30:00 [2] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

In Hanover on Dartmouth campus after a hepatitis C CME day. Had to hurry along as 3 doggies home undoubtedly had full bladders & empty stomachs as Beth left at 0930. The usual amount of energy to observe on a college campus. Horrendous traffic on Rt 120 between Lebanon & Hanover. Another R&R day, reasonable to do.

Activity was everywhere, eg...

Lengthening shadows (myself included) as in day, season, year, life (ironic be the green grass)

Walking 12:00 [1] 0.4 mi (29:59 / mi)

PM DP, dark but with moon. Played in Sandbox with Beetle as guest. All three love to run up to the top & gaze on all below.

Mocha got a bucket bath after - it should (by now) be a signal to her that she's on tap @ NHH tomorrow for pet therapy - a day she can bask in attention & be fragrant to boot. She's willing to give up the scent of "rolled-on carrion" for such attention.

Corn Maze O looks like a lot of fun but Saturday competition is so close to home that I feel compelled to remain close by after. I was unaware of corn maze designs until PG's intro. Amazing stuff - need to see how they're designed/made. It will be another first time fun event - BG was one western MA one many years ago. Maybe corn O will grow....

Oops, went to learn more about the competition to find that it was around sundown today. behind am I. Well, those who work (from any kind of distance) can cry foul - a mid-week, self-selective winnowing down: retired, unemployed, inappropriately energetic, just plain local, loco or some combination:-). Quite the creative web page, love the logo.

Now that some time has passed, I'm bemoaning my lack of "something" on Sat #5 and Sun #9.... Something was amiss - was it the wallet (now all but gone) or all the boat stuff? Did all contrive to make for unaccountable mind-map contact lapses...? Will never know but mental where-with-all is paramount. If not between the ears, at least carry it in the "backpack" for ready reference.

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.4 mi (37:29 / mi)

AM DP in the Sandbox, frost on the ground, heard a rooster crow, most unusual.

Road/trail 50:00 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) 3.2 mi (15:37 / mi)

R&R day, rest & recuperate, legs like mud but no specific aches & pains worth noting.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (48:00 / mi)

Broad Brook Trail with Bruce and Carl (college roommates), Beth, Peggy & dogs. Up a little more than a mile, crossed on a downed tree & back to return side eventually - being equally creative in the recrossing - dogs a bit at a loss as to how to ford some rushing water. Return after 40 years for the three of us....

Broad brook trail head this morning with Carl and Bruce (we made our discovery of Broad Brook in the fall of 1965)

Today, little changed...

Orienteering race 1:09:24 [3] 5.6 km (12:24 / km) +195m 10:33 / km

USOC day 2, B run - good first leg/start; loss of contact on way to #3 for too long but kept on going & regained not 100m from control!; good enough thru #8 but no good plan to 9, losing some 3' - another minute on way to #10 (no excuse) and 30' being too far left on run in - 4.5' at the very end.....Walked up with Kevin Teschendorf not knowing it - duh, too bad as I've spent quite a bit og time with Gale & always wondered what Kevin might be like, look like etc - now I know & wish I'd asked this fellow his name - thought he might have been Canadian or even from Europe.

Superb meet: venue, org, terrain, competition etc. Disappointed with my performance, allowed myself to lose map contact more than I'd have liked. My left hamstring passed muster just fine. Interestingly, the right is now grumbling due to the slip/stretch on a wet log in Saturday's "marsh survey."

Hiking 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi) +175m 19:26 / mi

Walk to start & a hike at that! Wonderful woods to gaze upon.
