Brought along a TSS exercise. Probably should have worn gloves though because the fingers went numb after 5 minutes.

Note

I was recently approached about translating a book by Alberto Mínguez, the former coach of the Spanish national team.

The book is quite the hit in Spain. I certainly can recommend it after having read it.

It's a different style from many other orienteering books because it combines real stories, fictionalized stories, and practical advice for training and competition based on scientific studies.

You can read my teaser translation of it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1hEjzdEaEULVTilDW...

We're trying to gauge the level of interest before continuing the translation.

Would anyone be interested in reading a book like this?

Really fun session on Haystack Mountain. Everything was pretty accurate. Extremely grateful that the technology exists to make maps like this. Also grateful for the people who have taught me the process for it.

Map: https://photos.app.goo.gl/a6wv6vFzYVVnkTat7

I also tried out what Jagge had mentioned--placing controls in places without clear features. It worked pretty well and was also quite challenging. The app "punched" 9 before I actually hit the point, but I was close enough that I would have seen the flag had there been one. Looking for blank spots instead of features meant I had to rely much more on my surroundings, my compass, and on my ability to judge distance. Definitely recommend as a training method.

12 was a weird one. The ridge running down to it is actually a fairly open field, but there are enough trees nearby that KP mapped it as white forest. I got confused thinking that I had somehow gotten onto the ridge to the north. Also, in April they did a controlled burn in parts of the forest and one of those bits is right where my line got squiggly near 12. I couldn't find the green!

Once I figured out what was happening I punched 12 and then took 30 seconds to breathe, refocus, and get back into it. Making the most of every step out there.

2x River To Gate on the powerline trail.

I like this one because it starts out very steep and gets my heart rate and gets leds steep as you climb, meaning I have to consciously move my legs faster to get a good workout. I struggle to do that, so it means I'm working on a weakness.

Loads of rocks and ice. A few inches of snow towards the top also. Excellent conditions.

Currently 170 entries in ME at the Maximus O-Meeting. Registration closes on Sunday.

Chilly Cheeks

I encouraged Matt Lipsey to come because he's very fit and I knew he would be good competition. Ultimately I lost to him by 7 seconds. He started hard and opened a 40 second gap on me, but I saved my energy to drive hard for the final 2.5k and try to catch him. I closed fast, but not fast enough.

Still, I ran 5 minutes faster than last year, which matters more to me than winning this race. The course was about 500m shorter. But half the difference was because I had Matt out there also.

We compensate each other's racing styles. He starts hard and holds on and I start slower and push hard after 60 or 70%.

Really good workouts this weekend.

Here it is, folks! The entries for the first biennial Aston Mountain course design contest!

We had 5 entries, all of which I think have used the terrain in excellent ways. Several of the candidates provided control descriptions that I have removed because not everyone had them. I will be using them when I go out to train on these courses.

Edit: We just received a late entry to the contest (Entry F). I've allowed it because it only means the entry will receive fewer votes and because, well, why the hell not?

If you'd like to make any comments about the courses, feel free to comment on my log.

You can see the entries here.

And you can vote on them here.

Voting closes on Sunday evening!

Dusk-O with GPS Orienteering

I like this training method because I get to do the first few controls with daylight to get my confidence up. And slowly the course gets more and more technically challenging. I'm only using a 250 lumen headlamp for these courses because I want to work in low-viz conditions. For night-o races I can use a stronger lamp.

Each mistake was due to going off my bearing and misjudging the distance. This is in part due to the rocky ground and blueberry distracting me from the map. But that just means I need to have an even more conscious focus on reading the map and checking the compass.

I lost the flow completely at 11. So I took a few minutes to breathe and refocus. That worked pretty well.

Edit: Got it together and went out, because no one ever reached their goals by making excuses.

Tough to get the motivation up for even an easy run alone in the cold, dark night, especially after a long day of work. But I put my clothes on, grabbed my headlamp and the ZMR simulation, and stepped out the door.

Now I feel much better.

Note

Just signed up for M-Elite at the Maximus Orienteering Meeting west of Madrid in mid-February. There's currently 78 foreign competitors in the M-E Class, and 1 Spanish competitor. Most Spanish orienteers don't sign up until a week before the event. So there should be about 40 to 50 more people signing up before the actual event.

That's going to be a long start window.

Drove out to Crystal Lake Ski Center today, but the final hill was way too icy. My car started to slide back while I was accelerating. While I was stuck, a pickup came sliding down the hill and just missed me.

So I said screw this. Went back to the church further down the hill, parked the car, and ran the rest of the way in.

Skate ski 1:46:33 [3] 9.76 km (10:55 / km) +201m 9:54 / km

They had just enough snow to make skiing possible, but, in their words, the trails were rolled, not packed. I was digging in for a lot of this. There was also a lot of uphill, but I did say I wanted to practice. So I can't complain.

Really cool trails actually and it looks like it could be a fun place for orienteering in warmer weather.

Running 45:35 [3] 7.94 km (5:44 / km) +150m 5:15 / km

Very glad I didn't try to drive up. I probably could have made it up the hill, but the downhill is what concerned me.

This concern was validated when I saw an SUV in a ditch just off the road while running down. And it wasn't there when I ran up.

Note

I strongly dislike the practice of exchanging US uniforms with the current design. It is okay when we have a new team uniform and you'd like to exchange the old one. But when many around the world have our shirt, it takes away most of the meaning from earning your spot on the US team, at least in my opinion.

Case in point:

That is a photo of a middle-aged Spanish orienteer wearing our uniform in a training session in Spain. I know this person and he is a good man, but that's not the point. The point is that the value of earning a US jersey is lost because there is such an obsession with exchanging jerseys. This is true when both orienteers in other countries wear our current uniform and Americans who have never been on a US team wear the jersey anyway.

There are times when I go to a national event in the US and it feels like half the participants are wearing the current US team jersey. I would personally like to see much more respect for our uniform and what it means. By all means, reach out to other countries' teams and try to make friends, but preserve the value of our team. Trade old jerseys or the affinity wear.

So there's this one map of state forest 15 minutes from my house. I've mapped it with high-density data and put in as many features as I can reliably add. But I'm a bit stumped when it comes to designing courses there. So I figured why not have some fun with it?

Aston Mountain Course Setting Contest:
1. Download the image from this link by clicking on the three vertical dots in the upper right and then on download. It is at 1:10,000 and the resolution is 300 dpi. The area is bounded on the north, east, and west by the roads and on the south by the purple line.
2. Set a middle distance course that I could complete in 40 minutes. Start and finish are completely open.
3. Email me your course as a PDF or JPG by next Wednesday, January 22.
4. I will post the submitted courses on here and create some way to vote on them.
5. The winner will be decided by popular vote.

Terrain notes:
This terrain isn't what you might consider the ideal middle distance terrain, but I have see interesting courses made on similar maps. So I'd like to see everyone's creativity. The terrain is very runnable for the most part. Although the steep sections tend to be very rocky.

The green on the map is generally Hemlock, which is low visibility but still reasonably runnable.

Appalachian Adventure.

The state forest south of my house is really great. But the trails have an annoying problem of not always connecting with each other. So I decided that, as an orienteer, it was becoming of me to connect them.

There's some super rough stuff out there! Rocky ground, blueberry, scrub oak. It slowed me down a lot, but I was enjoying the springlike weather so it passed quickly.

I also checked out two of the marshes near my house. The blueberry looks high, but there also seem to be deer paths I can take. They're actually runnable, you don't sink waist deep. But the ground is super soft and mossy. Perfect for bog intervals.

New Spanish orienteering single being released in vinyl at the end of March:
Diez mil arañazos diez mil esguinces

Kasi te kedas sin amigos

Shiver by the River 5k/10k organized by the Scranton Running Co. Not much competition, but a really great community event. 480 people out!

Crazy warm at 12C and very windy.

I had a group of high schoolers with me for the first k, they started to drop after that and then turned around at 2.5k. I was all by my lonesome after that, so I just took it as a slightly faster tempo.

A good workout and my Achilles doesn't hurt at all. Races like these are normally what have aggravated it the most over the past three years. So I'm happy to see that the exercises and insoles are working.

Dusk-O. Really slow with all this white crap on the ground. Didn't we handle this winter thing already?

https://photos.app.goo.gl/3ch6kjm2nzdhEa2M7

Used GPS orienteering again. Honestly, that app is a lifesaver for training on your on, especially night-o. It takes a bit for the GPS to catch up to you sometimes. But for those really vague areas it is huge. That little extra bit of confidence so you can run faster.

Not that you can run fast in this terrain. Even without the snow, it is slow out there. It's funny how it's slow in a very different way from Norway, but still a terrain where strength is essential.

I plan to do many night-Os this winter. The thing for me about night-O is that I need a warm space to get changed afterwards. And I've found that a car really doesn't cut it. So having these maps within running distance of my house will increase my night-O frequency.

A pretty fun adventure making my way to Tilbury Knob.

The trail is very lightly used. So it disappeared completely in a few sections. At one point that left me working my way through a bunch of fallen hemlocks that I suspect were damaged by HWA.

Tried to work my way up a cliff at one point and made it most of the way there only to find ice-covered rocks. So I had to turn around and find another opening in the cliffs.

I did find an old aqueduct that was pretty cool. Not really sure how it worked and why it was built. I'll look into it.
