climbing 2:00 [3]

5.5, 5.7, 5.6
hands were tired at the start, poss from carrying the washer and dryer yesterday. They seemed less bad later, got up the 5.6 fast and relatively smoothly. Then tried a bit of bouldering, interesting but not particularly successful.

Note

Orienteering theme at work today. Seminar at lunchtime (guh) on stochastic orienteering", which I went to because it had orienteering in the title and it had orienteering in the title.

In the morning I was down in the cafeteria and overheard someone saying how his son had been orienteering in the southern hemisphere and needed a southern hemisphere compass. Any guesses who it was?

I went over and introduced myself. The clique is growing.

Nice collection of pics from the Irish Champs.

Note

Is Nov 5-6th a good weekend for people to come training on Blue Mtn? Any better ideas?

Note

Honestly?

How can people not be taking Vlad up on this offer. It seems like an excellent idea.

Note

Saturday's QR.

Only specified two points, most of the time the GPS was pretty accurate. It didn't like control 5 (I thought it very strange that I ended up going to 2 en route to 6)... and going to 13 I ended up bouncing off the track, but was surprised I did so. It seemed a little closer to the hill line than I expected. Now, I wasn't orienteering well at all, so...

Note

Sunday's QR.

Support for my hypothesis that the map was wrong at 7 - I ran up that index contour re-entrant and up the hill (unmapped) slightly to the right and the depression control was to the right of that. I don't know what happened at 4, I suspect it was gps madness - but I wasn't expecting to come out so close to that water control (where the gps is accurate).
Where the control was at 9, up at the very top of the re-entrant, was not all that far from the west end of the hilltop.

Afaik, I was running (jogging/walking) south until I punched 11, so gps is off there.

Fun times, even if I wasn't orienteering wonderfully this weekend.

Boulderdash part II, Bear Brook SP, Green

Silly mistake to the first, lost confidence with where I was on the way to the first, so ran up a spur to double-check. Mostly ok after that. Seemed like the map wasn't wholly precise, but adequate for the job. Lots of fun and thanks to all involved.
