orienteering 1:09:00 [2]
10c

Ansonia, CT

don't know if I needed more sleep or if it's tough orienteering or if I just cant orienteer, but I made several mistakes and hada hard time reading the vaguer contours.

I'm not used to the mapping standard for the rock features either. Similar probs in Pond Mtn.

Beautiful woods, good company on the drive to and from :)

Stopped in IKEA before heading back to White Plains. Billy is back in my life after an eight year absence.

other 3 [3]

pole-dancing ;p

Took a while to get to nh, got stuck on the i84 outside Danbury for an hour before running out of podcasts to listen to, so I changed route, went south, tried cutting cross-country but failed, then 7 south to the 15.

Apparently some guy had shot at the police (or troopers, or whatever) and the police shot back. The guy didn't win, and the road got shut down.

Note

hah, now splits are up, it's fairly obvious I died en route to 20, and that I spent a lot of time at the food/drinks between 21 and 22 :)

orienteering race 3:50:00 [3] 26.2 km (8:47 / km)
ahr:170 max:192 30c

Highlander.

I survived. Actually, I died towards the end of the second loop, but recovered after the drinks and biscuits stop.

I tried looking for an alternate route to the first control, couldn't find one, so that gave the big boys a thirty second head start. Only lost another twenty seconds on the first loop, felt good, 42 minutes in, a couple of minutes down on Will and Ross, and running with Jordan and Kenny. They seemed to suffer less on the 7km trail run, but I kept with them (or not far behind). At the 13th, saw Will H and Jordan in the distance, they had made a small mistake (Will a big one, running towards 17). I died around the 19th (or maybe on the hill up to the 18th, where I ran out of sports drink, but the 19th was downhill, so could run that).
Kenny ran away from me there and there was nothing I could do about it. Got into the map exchange/food and drink/assembly area maybe ten minutes down on the lead, fifteen or more down when I left :)
Walk-jogged the next couple of controls, then started to stumble a little bit more continuously...
Mistake on the 25th (which I spiked when putting it out yesterday), lost twenty sceonds, I was concentrating more on energy gel (my first)... and drank water at the control and finished the gel, then ran off, then turned around and ran 50m back up to the control to punch it, oops.
Clean to the finish, a bit faster after the gel, but still suffering a lot.

Will did a good job in 3h13, and Jordan L impressed to finish second, nice to see a military boy doing well. Then Ross, Kenny, me, Alexei, Ali, Sam, Hilly Ben, I think that was the top ten.

Fun times, shatttered afterwards, took a long time to get any warmth back in the body. Thanks to all the organisers for putting on such a cool event, and to the racers for making it a race and to the visitors last night who came armed with lasagne... yum.

Bad point to the day - BG not being able to run :(
Highlight of the day - Sam hand-delivering me a burger as I lay dazed on the ground.

edit: added hr data, lost satellite reception almost at the end of part three, apparently... after 21km (garmin) in 2h10... hr averaged 157 for the last 1h31, so it must have been averaging close to 180 for the first 2hrs. total distance was probably 29-30km?
6 PM

Note

I'll probably find a few more small mistakes later, but it seems like I lost less than three minutes in almost four hour of orienteering.

PG posted the race maps on his log:
