Sprint 1 at Fort Washington SP. 2.1k, 75m climb. Course designed by Greg Ahlswede, map updated by Sandy F to include a moderately complex trail network following a disc golf course (used extensively by the courses). Lots of nice route choice snd navigation challenges. Very hot (upper 80s) and humid, so quite a sweatfest.

An OK run with lots of hesitations in the trail maze. Tough to run hard with the heat. Walked some, particularly on the uphills.

Orienteering race 20:54 intensity: (58 @0) + (1 @3) + (3:25 @4) + (16:30 @5) *** 3.14 km (6:40 / km) +31m 6:21 / km

Sprint 2. 2.3k, 55m. More trail maze (it wasn't any easier the second time) and then a long route choice leg. Pretty drained from the first run so decision making was a real.challenge. Big error on #5 (maybe 90 sec or so). Thought I had made an error on the long leg but I ended up with an OK route. Thanks to Sandy and all her helpers.

French Creek "Lucky 7" Rogaine - 6 hour option with Janet (12 hr also available, but that wouldn't have been with Janet). 50 controls spread across seven O-maps of various ages. A mix of 1:10 and 1:15 scales and significant overlap of some of the maps. Muggy weather but not too hot.

Found planning a bit of a challenge with a bunch of different maps but managed to come up with a reasonable plan. Truncated the initial plan since there was some slow going where the woods have gotten overgrown, as well as the unplanned navigational challenges inherent in a rogaine. There were two controls where we only found streamers - the bags/punches were placed in a slightly different location - we were given credit for the controls. Only had one control where we spent an excessive amount of time finding it (#71) and a couple of others where we puzzled briefly.

Used four of the maps (North, East, Central, and West), visited 14 controls and scored 873 points (total available TBD). Highest score in "mixed seniors" (45+). 2nd or 3rd overall - but the hard-core were all doing the 12-hr.

Thanks to Steve Aronson and Sharon Siegler for doing all the work to put the event on, as well as their helpers, particularly Janet Porter and her friend for doing the cooking.

EDIT - Janet's log has additional details on our routes, trials and tribulations. The snakes she mentions were probably the largest garter snakes I've ever seen, about 2.5 feet long and 3/4 - 1" diameter.
