Orienteering race 34:58 [4] *** 3.81 km (9:11 / km) +115m 7:59 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcons 5

US Champs Middle Distance on Letchworth SP East map (3.6km SL, 135 m climb, 14 controls. Good course by Rob Holmes. Course was quite technical for the first 7 controls, then a transition to simpler, faster terrain.

Good run with a one minute error on #11 which I over ran (from the map I expected the depression to be closer to the power line). Was careful from the very start since the technical stuff started right away. Left the trail too early on #2 but realized it quickly and corrected. Used the fence to the south of the trail as my attack point for #2, which worked well. The bag for 2 was at the foot of the spur (as described), so wasn't apparent until you got to the very end of the spur. Probably lost about 30 seconds on this one. Ended up 2nd in M60, 25 seconds behind Jeff and 10 seconds ahead of Ron. 6th overall on Green Y.

Good running weather with temps about 50F. Excellent job by the ROC team (and helpers) both organizationally and technically. Especially nice was the rainbow they arranged for the ride to the assembly area this morning.

Hiking 18:43 [1] 1.6 km (11:43 / km) +61m 9:50 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 5

Walk to the start. Did some jogging/running on the trail near the start to warm up.

Orienteering race 1:08:31 [4] *** 7.82 km (8:46 / km) +261m 7:31 / km

US Champs Long at Letchworth SP East. Green Y course (6.6km SL, 225m climb, 13 controls). Good course by Lindsay Worner.

Had a good run with some small time losses in execution or route choice but probably only could have been 2-3 minutes faster.
-Saw the left route to #1, avoiding the vegetation and using the indistinct trail right to the control.
-Took the trail and ridge (esker?) route to 4 and attacked off where one of the little streams crosses the trail. The vegetation in the area didn't look like what the map said, but I hit the control OK (GPS track shows that the flag was in the circle, though maybe not dead center).
-Got a little confused at the trail-stream junction because the trail is in a bit of a gully there so it looks like there are two side streams coming in. Also, the vegetation coming out of 4 was thicker than expected so I dropped down the hill to avoid it.
-Intended to go pretty straight to 6 just skirting the steepest climb to the left. Drifted further left than intended, crossing the stream at the trail, then headed straight up the big reentrant once I figured out where I was. Stayed right of the green and saw the larger reentrant east of the one with the control in it.
-7 and 8 were stratightforward but I can't figure out what the purpose of 8 was. It certainly didn't set up a route choice decision for the 8-9 leg. I would have placed this control 350-400m south of 7 in the small side reentrant just beyond the flat ridge top to set up a much better route choice to 9.
-Took the road route to 9 and slogged it out. Plenty of time to plan the rest of the course.
-Executed the plan to 11 (minimize climb) but had a bit of trouble finding the pit since the medium green vegetation in the area wasn't as distinct as expected.
-Was planning to cut through the green and take the trail to 12 but the white woods out to the road looked good so I went that way instead.

Found them all, in the right order- good enough for 1st in M60 and 8th overall on Green Y. AP says I lost no time.

Road Run warm up/down 7:00 [2] 0.7 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: NB 1210 "Leadville"

Walk/jog/run on the way to Start. Took a look at some stuff on the model map as I passed through.

Orienteering race 20:30 [5] *** 3.41 km (6:01 / km) +5m 5:58 / km

US Champs Sprint at Genesee Valley Park near Rochester, NY. Green course (2.4km SL, 50m climb, 19 controls). Nice course by Mike Lyons. Map printing wasn't very good so it was hard to see the mapped paths, especially in yellowish areas. Weather was a little warm, 70's and mostly sunny when I ran.

Had an OK run. Blew the route choice from 7-8 when I didn't notice that I could get past the fence to the NW and took a longer route to the break to the SE. Lost 30-40 sec. Also lost some time going to 9 (10-15 sec) when I followed a herd path into some green thinking it would lead to the bag (it didn't). Placed 4th in M60, far enough back from the speedsters that even an error free run wouldn't have been fast enough.

Took the right route going 3-4 which I think is the faster way (and certainly the safer route based on what I could see on the map at the time). I think that taking the same bridge for 10-11 was the better route, but I didn't do that.
