Western States Championships Day 2 - Green course. Pelican Bay map. Very nice course in somewhat more technical terrain. Far less open field running than yesterday. But, a disappointing run. Seemed to be off line on most of the controls, so lots of 1- 2 minute errors. Also not the best route choice on the long leg. Shoulda coulda been under an hour. Dropped to 4th for 2 day total time. Straightline distance 6.7 km with 180m climb.

Western States Champs Day 1 - Green course. Plains of Despair map. Lots of running across open areas. A good run. Missed the first non-trivial control (#2) for about a 1 min loss, then hit all the others. A few hesitations and not quite optimal routes, but good otherwise. 2nd in M55, ~5th on Green. 6.0 km straightline with 265 m climb.

Laramie Daze 4 - Pitcher Hill map (1:15000). Mostly wide open running across either short grass prarie or sage meadows, so a bit of follow-the-leader. And as usual, the bags were hung high. Flip-flopped with Soupbone and bgr. Rick B spotted us a couple of minutes at #4 then passed us back on the 7-8-9 leg. Wanted to take things a bit easier today so did some walking and avoided any foot races to the finish. 10th overall. Sunny (with some haze from wildfire smoke?), 70's and a bit more breeze than we've been having. Another very fine Daze day.

One Cowboy Relay (motala) on Gates of AMT Hell map. Four ~1 km loops followed by a longer 1.6 km loop. The first four loops were shuffled (24 possibilities) and then everyone did the same final loop. My order: BDAC. Learning from last years version of this event, I worked on being careful in the early loops and not get drawn off to other bags. I was mostly successful, although I did check a few that I wasn't looking for at the time. Also had a few less than optimum route choices. Ended up 10th overall, good enough for a prize (a bottle of Perrier water). Another fine day of orienteering in the Laramie Range.

Laramie Daze 2, Middle Crow's Toe. 1:15,000/5m

Another fine day of orienteering in Laramie. Mass start with a 1.2 km mostly dirt road run to the first control, a couple of turning controls, then a 1.7 km leg back, and finishing up with 6 shortish and more technical legs. Major screw-up on the second long leg which cost about 8 minutes and several places. Also bobbled #9 a bit. Warm and sunny again. Same level of oxygen as yesterday.

Laramie Daze Day 1 - Moose Outlet map (1:10000) Mass start with ~40 people. Sunny, upper 70's. Some low sage, some trails, some woods. Bags hung high. Very fine.
