Orienteering (Rogaine) 5:40:00 [2] ** 13.5 mi (25:11 / mi)
spiked:8/10c shoes: NB 809

CNYO Rogaine near Pharsalia, NY with Janet as Team "Ramble On" in coed 6 hr category.

Nice day for rogaining with temperatures in the 70's and partly cloudy. We had a pretty good run (walking mostly), getting all the controls we had originally planned to get. The woods were a bit nasty around the 3rd, 4th and 5th controls we did, which slowed us down and raised some doubt as to whether we'd be able to stick to our plan. Fortunately the woods were much better in the second half. Most of the nastiness was around an area of tornado damage from several years ago plus areas of mature forest where the undergrowth was prickly stuff and/or ferns which obscured what was underfoot.

Here's a copy of our route. We went clockwise, starting with 91 and finishing with 92. On controls 72 and 92 we were a bit off on our bearings and had to correct (turned the right way both times). All other controls we hit pretty cleanly. The route coming out of 74 was to avoid some more recent blowdown which was not mapped. Woods were nasty from north of 72 until we got to the road west of 90. At 75 we knew where the control was but took the circuitous route to get across the "marsh" (pond) without having to go more than knee deep (although Janet did find one spot a bit deeper).

We ended up with 782 points visiting 10 controls (out of ~3300 possible, 45 controls). That was good enough for 1st in the coed category and was the most anyone doing just 6 hrs got (the field was rather small, ~10 teams).

We covered about 13.5 miles actual distance. Straightline distance was about 16.5 km, just over 20min/km. Climb was only about 275m, none of it very long or steep.

Trail Run hills 57:27 [3] 5.26 mi (10:55 / mi) +300m 9:17 / mi
shoes: NB 874

At Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Ran pretty much the perimeter of the trail system, including the southwest part which I rarely visit because it's a big, steep hill. Tried to push on the uphills but was relegated to walking several times. Nice day with fairly low humidity, sun and in the 70's. Trails were muddy in lots of places.
