Orienteering race 2:58:20 [4] **** 11.9 km (14:59 / km) +1722ft 12:17 / km
shoes: Integrators pair 2

DVOA A meet + WRE - long - South Mountain, PA. Basically a big steep hill with several summits (and the the upper campus of Lehigh University on one of them). This was by far the most physical course I'd done in a long time, and the hot weather (80's F) didn't help. Rather too much trail running (although this was better than the alternative!). I think the Ski-O's I'd done earlier in the year did help me decipher the myriad of trails in the first half of the course. I thought the first half was more orange like than I'd expect for the team trials (although much more route choice), although it was very physical. There was a killer leg (10-11) about half way through the course with a choice of either a lot of climb (which I took) or a long run around the hill. The terrain was steep and rocky, which I didn't like.
I'd entered this course to prove to myself that I could still do this sort of thing, which I succeeded (with 1 min 40 s to spare!). However, the main issue today was my fitness, not orienteering (despite a couple of stupid mistakes near the end due to tiredness), and even if I remove my mistakes in winsplits, I would have still taken 2:50:00.

Orienteering race 1:36:16 [3] **** 4.84 km (19:53 / km) +623ft 16:38 / km
shoes: Integrators pair 2

DVOA A-meet - middle - Hickory Run state park, PA. This was a technical area with low visibility, nothing at all like the open CO and WY maps I'm used to. I overshot the first control, and then had a complete disaster on no 2. Eventually, after about no 7, I began to get the hang of the map and started to do much better. I was nervous about no 12 (the longest leg) but even this one worked out OK (apart from going about 10 paces up the wrong trail). However, I'd lost so much time on the first few controls that I had a poor finish time, even by my standards.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 34:04 [4] *** 3.49 km (9:46 / km) +272ft 8:43 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend

DVO A meet + WRE - sprint at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA. Although I'd run on campuses before (Rice, University of Calgary, CU Boulder), this was the first time I'd run on one with so many passage, steps etc - i.e. places you could easily get blocked. I actually found I quite enjoyed it - needing to to make quick decisions even at my running pace. Mostly downhill course helped the pace, if not my speed. Only real bobble was right at the very end, I saw the finish banners and so naturally went to the end of them thinking it was the last control - it was the finish. Several others made the same mistake.

Commute. Windy on the way home.
I actually forgot to write this down yesterday, so I've split the total between the two days.
