Orienteering race 2:42:32 [5] *** 15.2 mi (10:42 / mi)
ahr:164 max:178 28c

US champs Ultralong at East Fork State Park, hosted by OCIN
Mass start event never ceases to amaze. Some good follows, definitely some bad as well. Ran with Tom for most of the day, along with a pack of 3 other strong runners through the middle part of the race. Somewhat turned off the brain from 16 to 20, trying to keep up the pace. After the water stop between 20 & 21 decided to split off a trail route with Nicolay. Had wanted to take that route, but would not have chosen to go it alone. Ran the footpath to the north-south creek trail without looking over my shoulder. I had no idea where Tom and the OUSA duo had gone - either ahead or behind - but found myself alone for the rest of the race. Wanted to push hard, but not blow up now that I was running solo. Luckily didn't have any issues with the remaining controls and finished the event with tired legs but happy spirit. Ended up pulling out a 4th place run, but got the bronze in the USA category. Happy to finish so well amongst such a competitive crowd. I think Tom and I ran smart, sitting in the back when needing to, but holding our own when in the woods by ourselves.
Great weekend of orienteering! So much fun to hang out with the MNOC crew, cruising 11 deep at this distant event. Definitely makes the event a success, no matter the results.

Orienteering race 1:06:35 [4] *** 5.0 mi (13:19 / mi)
ahr:162 max:179 24c

US champs relay at McFarlan Woods hosted by OCIN
4-point MNOC team
Order was:
PeteW - Green
MollyMo - Orange
Foxshadow - Green
Biz - Red
Another inconsistent run for me. Had problems finding several pits and depressions. CP9 specifically gave me problems. Clue was knoll, outside of northeast edge, which ended up being in an unmarked pit. I was initially on the correct spur, but didn't see the control and thought I was in the wrong spot. Then went east and again was confused, but finally figured out that I had been on the correct spur. Kinda lame and wasn't super jazzed, but don't think it cost our crew any places. 4-point MNOC ran well and finished mid pack in a pretty good field of teams.

Orienteering race 1:16:08 [5] **** 6.4 mi (11:54 / mi)
ahr:174 max:189 23c

US Champs Blue Night-O at Mt. Airy, Hosted by OCIN
Had an OK run for the opening event. Headlamp broke on the way to CP4, so ended up using a backup hand held light for most of the race. Not an ideal situation. Fell down more frequently, and slow eye transition from blinding light on map to dark distance in woods. No major blowups, which was good, but had a rather inconsistent run for 7th place. Route choice could have been snappier as well, too much flip-flopping.
