Not our day today, but a most interesting and memorable rogaine. Fossicker's Dream, more like a bit of a nightmare for us. The terrain made for really interesting navigation - lots of spur/gully, and smallish features under the map. Down at 10m contours a number of 5m features which we'd pickup on in WA would not show - which confused me a few times in looking at gullies and the height of spurs/knolls, which generally rose up quite steeply at first and then levelled off, giving them a look of being a bit larger than they actually were.

Add to that a lot of gold mining diggings in the watercourses, and a steady amount of loose rocks underfoot which eventually had their toll on my feet. I haven't gotten blisters under the balls of my feet for a while now, but this rogaine managed to do it. It may also be b/c a layer of skin came off after the world's 8 weeks earlier. Running through the Loddon river at knee deep within a minute of the start didn't help either.

Wil was looking like death warmed up at breakfast, with a bad stomach since Tuesday, which was still bad after the rogaine. It was impressive that he turned up and kept a good pace up for about 18hours when he started struggling a lot. Just as well for me as my feet were starting to blister right about then too.

Planning was too optimistic again at 110 clearing the course. We didn't expect to really do that and had a number of options to cut low pointers.

We started with high energy as usual. The mistakes started fast and kept coming. By 6pm we had, I'm guessing 3 major mistakes in. Later we'll miss getting 2 controls - one at about midnight and the other at around sunrise. And also lose 40mins at 230am. Unf my trace does not show the loss of 91 at 6am well enough as we spent a good amount of time going up and down a bunch of little spurs there.

The trace shows how we cut it early and headed home, getting in around 1035am. Overall, one of the best areas for a rogaine I've experienced due to the totally interesting navigation - very few dull moments.

Apart from my feet all was well and for the first time I didn't open any packaged food aside from the SIS gels (and a fruit salad tub) and just ate fruit (3-4 bananas, 2 apples, 1 mandarin - thanks to the fruit drops), 1 x pbh sandwich, 1 x nuts, 3 x noodles, 2-3 x rice/egg cakes which I loved.

My trace and map here, and results here. 11th overall and 3rd MV with 2640 points.

And well done to Shane and Ben for coming 7th overall with 2900 points. We saw them around 6am at control 80. They walked all the way, were out there 1.5hrs more than us but were obviously much more accurate. Hence this being such an excellent rogaine in that the nav challenge was harder than the physical.

Interesting to see a different approach from David and Julie here - sticking to the tracks, possibly multiple pack drops, 105k, 1800m climb and 3430 in score.
