Orienteering race (Boomer Spice Brook) 1:42:00 [5] 14.0 km (7:17 / km)
shoes: X-Talons 212

Time and dist estimates. mp'd on the second last control. Fun race overall on a nice cool day.

I started out following the crowd to 1 and 2 and then skipped 3 with ADay chasing. Found Ocar and Henry at about 5 and followed Henry on to 8 where he successfully led me into a couple of fake gullies which opened a gap and I never saw him again. Managed to make a meal of getting to 9 by finding 14 from the long side of the hill first. Got to 9 and decided to skip 10 since I knew where 11 was now - on the way past 14. Found 11, 12, 13 (same as 9) and 14 fairly well. Ran past Ceri on the way back to 13 but she still got there before me.

Saw Andrew on the way to 15 where he was coming in to 11 from 10, ran past 16 on the way, and got that cleanly next. Then screwed up 17 pretty badly by running too high and past my creek crossing point. Thought I'd be able to identify the spot to cross, but just kept running down the track, finally crossed, realised I'm not in contact with the map, found the major track on the otherside and figured out I was a few hundred meters too far off. Though that was the end of my race. Found 17 and then compounded my errors by running too high up the hill and then findally spotting and running down to 19 in exploratory mode.

Great relief that I'm not totally out of the race as I saw Adrian on the way back to 18, and then Kellie and Andrew. Doubled back with some hope to 19, caught a glimpse of Adrian leaving 20, tried to make up time to 21 - but punched control 160 when I needed 150 (which was higher up the gully). Saw I needed 150 instead, and ran on looking for the next gully. Then looked down and got the two numbers mixed up and thought I had punched the right one and so took off for 22, and then 23 and the finish. Arrived a few minutes before Kelly and Andrew, so happy with that, but there's definite room for improvement. I'm probably leaning too heavily on the running side and not enough on the thinking/staying in contact with map side. Still taking too many nav risks and winging where I'm going.
