Orienteering Race race 41:06 [5] *** 4.6 km (8:56 / km)
16c

Finally had a Middle race I was happy with. AB Champs at Smokey Lake. I've always raced horrendous on this map and terrain, but nice, calm and in control today. Peter won in a good time of 35+, I was happy with my time.

Very flat of course, nice open woods, not too much deadfall, great visibility. I went mega slow in tricky sections, worked the compass and kept my head up to spot controls. Bobble early which made me bail out, but then hit it. Some wee stuff late.

This is really really nice terrain, but it's almost 2 hours from Edmonton.

Orienteering Race race 18:59 [5] *** 2.9 km (6:33 / km)
112c

Alberta Sprint Champs at Coronation Park. Was a pretty good course, AZ was the course consultant and I think that might have made a difference. Two long pure running legs off the start really taxed the legs.

Control 3-4. Peter MacKenzie took 9 second. I took 1:51. That was most of the race right there. I knew I was screwing up, didn't know it was that bad. Just didn't adjust to a 1:4000 map and ran way past my control and got running in circles.

Good news! My cross-country flats are pretty much toast! Might get the Nationals Sprint out of them or might be time for new shoes. Sadly my Fila flats are in very good shape.

Running 55:00 [2]

Very wet run in the river valley, just poured rain at various times during the day (luckily not when I was walking to or from work).

So I've booked my flight and I'm going to COC's in Whistler. Hopefully tonight getting the Airbnb spot and good to go.

Now I just have to get some fitness between now and then.

Orienteering Training 50:00 [3] 5.6 km (8:56 / km)

Wednesday Night Event in the Mill Creek starting from the Argyle velodrome.

24 controls! Good times! Very fun course designed by a younger club member as her first course! She said Geraint wanted less controls but man, fun course. I gave her some feedback that a couple of controls could have gone (ie the last one was dumb), but she did a pretty good job.

It's hot and smokey here.

Tonight, decide about Whistler.
