ran the new trails at Jones Creek...very nice, some hills but nothing like Char. Lake...easy footing and only a couple of muddy spots. This is really the time to go there since the mosquitoes have not appeared as yet...or the black flies...not the place to be once they appear.

luckily no serious wind this morning....lots of birds, osprey, ducks, swans,woodpeckers, herons but not a lot of fish. water is realllly clear, great color despite the cloud cover.

gardening 1:30:00 [3]

the deer had gotten in to our little enclave and nipped off the buds on all of the little pine trees that I planted last year...so I trekked into the woods and dug up 4 more and replaced the damaged ones. I also wandered up to the area with black raspberries and brought back a couple of those bushes. This is not your grandmother's gardening.

first Charleston Lake run of the season...no leaves yet so it really looks different. The trail was in great shape, only a few wet spots and really clear ...love this run.

workout felt good although I know I'm going to be sore tomorrow since I haven't been to the gym in 3 weeks...somehow doing a few situps and stretches along the way isn't quite the same.

a full day in the plane minus 6 hrs time change...we did get quite a bit of walking between flights since our layovers were from 1-2 hours each...3 of them by the by...good news is that our luggage made it as well...woo hoo!

Our final excursion...hiked down into the crater at Haleakala or rather hiked part way down, all the way would have taken too long and not left enough time for shopping and dinner before our flight. We reminisced about the time we backpacked into the crater and spent the night at one of the cabins, 1977...not much has changed.

lots of fish, a little chilly, wish I had a wet suit so we could have stayed in longer.

Note

several hours of beach time on the black sand beach...lots of turtles near shore but it was too rough to snorkel where they were.

really lots of fish...went to 2 different spots, hard to stay in for more than half hour at a time without getting cold...I need a wet suit or at least the top part.

ran along the sidewalk that goes along the beach...all the scenery of the beach without the sand...there were even some small ups and downs.

travel day...flew to Maui...spent the day checking out some of the sights...checked out some of the galleries, took a few short hikes down to the beach, life is good.

5 min. level, 20 min uphill (barely running) 2 min loooking for whales, 8 min downhill, 11 min level along the road...life is good! ...even if we didn't see any whales.

laps in the pool...have to get packed to go to Maui tomorrow morning....sad to leave.

hills, wind...grueling...thought we'd never make it to the coffee plantation for smoothies. I've never ridden a mountain bike...at least not for any distance...I found it a little rough on my wrists but then I didn't have on gloves and the handle bars weren't padded.

Hiked up the Wialau Trail from the Heiau...very steep in the beginning then through a really nice pine (of some kind) forest then into a real jungley section. The trail was marked for the most part but when that ended we decided to head back. The slope was less and we couldn't see anything above us because of the high bushes/trees.

really tough going into the wind but we didn't have to paddle on the way back...saw turtles.

went up to Kalaupapa Overlook and ran the trail/bushwhacked along the cliffs...awesome views of the park and the ocean...a couple of thousand feet below, we went farther than I had the other day and took a different trail back to the parking lot. Not a total up then down...there was even some flat parts.

level trail section to start...but when the trail petered out we realized that we misssed the turn for the one we wanted so we headed up the hill to the top of the ridge.

up a WP-like slope...so steep there were goats on it...I did remember to walk but realized that I didn't have my knife with me...no worry, the goats ran away! got up to the trail and still went uphill to where we thought the trail turned and started downhill but alas, turns out it was still a half mile from the turning point. We truned around since Rick had to get back to get in pool time before the bb game.

the downhill was a lot easier than the up...that and we were on the trail all the way down and didn't have the bushwack part....a little bit of twinge in my quad coming down.

ran the trail that runs along the cliffs on the north shore...great views of Kaulapapa (former leper colony) over 2000' below...I didn't get very close to the edge.
