Event: US Champs

orienteering (model) 23:00 [1] ** 1.53 mi (15:02 / mi)
spiked:8/11c

Took off work so I could get to the US Champs in plenty of time to work my shift at the sprint finish. Did the sprint model, taking the controls in order then from 8 to 5,3,2,fin. Jogged most of it, walked some while checking out specific map features. Expect to have some trouble with the 1:5000 scale. Also hope the real sprint map has better north arrows than the model.

run warm up/down 11:00 [1] 1.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Warmup before the sprint. Was a bit chilled after sitting in the shade working at the finish so needed a bit of jogging. Mostly back and forth to the bathrooms at the parking and in the parking lot.

orienteering race (sprint) 22:03 [4] *** 2.7 km (8:10 / km) +95m 6:57 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: Integrator06 studs

QOC: US Sprint Champs. Prince William Forest Park. Red. 15:07 start time so knew what the early finishers had done before I started. Mostly a good run except for botching #3. Got a little to high and ran well past it before looking down to the stream. Found the control in the pit but could not find the pit on the map. It was there but at the end of a ditch and my map reading eyesight is not very good in the woods. Ran up the stream and found it but also lost 1:30. Physically tired by 9 and struggled on the road to 10. Did not notice anyone specifically on my course until Greg Balther went by after 14. Thought he was on Blue but he seemed to have the same last controls.

The actual sprint map appears different from the model and as I compare the two now I can see why. The model map has much darker course printing, the control numbers are huge, and the circles are rarely broken to show what they are obscuring. The real map has normal course printing but darker and larger control descriptions. Neither has the word North or an N, just arrowheads on two of the N-S lines. I thought the model map was supposed to be similar to the actual event map.
