Orienteering race 2:42:00 [4] **** 12.7 km (12:45 / km) +650m 10:09 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons

I have time, so I figure I may as well confess my sins on this course.

1- Started off confident, with a clear goal of running under 2 hours which would be faster than 10 min/km and told myself that I dont have to push really hard to meet that goal. I just have to get out there and make some smart decisions. With that type of thinking; I was feeling like everything was clear. I picked a route through a narrow strip of "open" woods through the gnarly green. I figured that I could follow the boulders right up through it and basically fall into the reentrant I was looking for. I got caught on the parallel feature of boulders and didnt catch it. Wound up about 15m high in the wrong reentrant and when I didnt see features that were making sense I gravitated to large boulders that I could see that I figured would be mapped. Probably didnt do much good because I wasted time there before figuring out which direction I flubbed and properly corrected. about 5 min error.

2- Compass bearing while checking off features. It worked out fine, but my micro route was sketchy. lost about 30 seconds to climbing up cliffs and sliding down the other side of them.

3- Decided that I would be more comfortable going around the north side of the hill, and contoured quite well actually. Problem being that I didnt force myself to take an asmuth to the control and wound up closer to the line than what I wanted before making a run for the control. That cost me a few seconds

4- Started off with Rough Compass. Bad idea. I ran south for all of 15 paces before I cut and lost my head. Wound up on the opposite side of the green patch and hopped back toward the control through the green when I relocated. Lost about 2 min because I didnt take the extra 2 seconds to take a good bearing and follow it through.

5- Terrible exit from control 4. lost about a minute. Went straight south to the trail, rather than on a nice SW asmuth as I should have. Was slow on the trail. Cut in on the obvious handrail, I didnt want to blow this control. The only drawback was that I was running around on rocky ground and had to slow down to make sure I wasnt twisting my ankle.
Found 5 no problem

6.- slow, but my compass bearing from the trail put me in the right area. probably should have been smarter and taken a straight line from 5 to 6.

7- Counted the re-entrants, then made sense of the control area and hit #7 no problem. Could have made better progress through the blueberry brush.

8. another great compass asmuth right to the control. Dang that blueberry brush.

9. decided "just go down the hill and figure it out" was the best option. lucky me I did figure it out but it was stupid.

10. Got some water then ran for the trail, but rather than straight south like intended I headed SE aciddentally and didnt get to the trail as efficiently as I had hoped. I felt slow on the trail, but I was making progress nonetheless. Then I hit a bend and thought there would be a shortcut. I was being dumb and actually changed my mind after seeing it and then ended up floundering around for a little bit getting back to the trail. Tried contouring around to the cliffs that I was keen for, but must have ended up a bit lower than I was planning because I saw the cliff to the south east a bit and started looking around. Finally figured it out.
This was a bad leg for me considering that I didnt execute cleanly.

11- VERY VERY slow.
12- Even more slow. My legs tightened up on me and I was worried about cramps.

13- I made sense of all of this and wish I was able to run this to see if I would ahve been confused.

14- same; walking most of the leg makes it easier

15- sucked at contouring this time and was drifting at the mercy of the contours that I was so afraid of and the blueberry brush that I was sick of trompsing over. Lost about 2 minutes

16- probably could have left 15 to the west rather than north, but I found this one easy.

17-made sense of all the features

18- same

19- slow and bad micro route, knew where this one was it was just a matter of getting there and my body could not get there in a hurry.

20- didnt pay attention to the map much until I found the stream and the river. found it easy enough. dangerous though, I could have wound up too low if it werent a 5m boulder or a trail to catch me first.

21- trail to following cliffs up to the control.

22- very tired again

23- tired
24- tired
25- tried to go north to hit the massive cliff on the ridge of cliffs to get the trail... This happened but not as nicely as I had hoped. hit the control.
26- went to the trail to the road, cut a corner, ran the road more, then hit the trail which was rocky and I was very tired. My attack was the two boulders on each side of the trail, and then saw the cliffs that lined up perfectly.

27- allowed myself to get drawn into the natural flow of things and hit the rock features that led me to the control, but I was so tired at this point I didnt pay attention enough to see the control just yards away. I usually have eagle eyes for orange, by this time I was a one track mind of survival without cramping up.

28- probably could have been a bit faster if I had taken a straighter woods asmuth and was fresh, but I wasnt and I couldnt handle much more than just "get to the trail" and go.

29- I'm pretty sure watching paint dry would be quicker, and probably more entertaining, than my last little run.
