Two-day results for Masters Nationals

(they don't include DNF or MP)

2 PM

Walking 1:15:01 intensity: (20:56 @0) + (51:38 @1) + (2:22 @2) + (5 @3) 5.15 km (14:34 / km) +40m 14:01 / km
ahr:87 max:111 shoes: Hoka Bondi7--W9D

While Glen biked at Green Lane on singletrack trails, I walked around a bird sanctuary near the north end of the lake (he had dropped me there first), checking out what was nearby (mostly Canada geese; also a great blue heron, some ducks, and a few small birds flying away from me in the shrubs). Then I walked the roads to where he parked the car to access the trails, arriving shortly before he came out of the woods. I then tacked on another 10 minutes on dirt trails to check out the gazebo/overlook (not much to see), and on my way back to the car saw three deer, including a two point buck. Nice day, about 65 and sunny.

Hiking 8:16 intensity: (50 @1) + (1:56 @2) + (4:37 @3) + (53 @4) 0.32 km (26:10 / km) +45m 15:17 / km

To the start of Day 2s courses at Bigelow Hollow, with the map on the other side of the main road from where we'd been yesterday. Didn't take as long as I'd planned, but I was happy to have my hiking pole along for the climb, and also for the course. Mid 40s, sunny.

This side was hillier, rockier, and had many more large swaths of mountain laurel forests. Ugh.

Orienteering race (Brown Y) 1:29:08 intensity: (5:11 @1) + (40:10 @2) + (36:03 @3) + (7:44 @4) *** 4.63 km (19:15 / km) +97m 17:25 / km

Masters Championship at Bigelow Hollow SP, Day 2, Brown Y. 3.6 km, 90m climb.

Felt much better this morning than the past three, and could breathe much better, so was optimistic I'd navigate okay today, and for the most part I did (no wandering). Two very small hesitations in the circle, #5 (go to the right general area, but it was off to my right; Brown X competitors were also in the area looking for the same point) and #8 (a pit in medium green), but hesitating let me look around for the control flag.

Got a bit hung up in the green/mt laurel between 5 and 6, but I think a lot of people did. The good thing was that I exited the green to the trail almost right next to the mapped stone pile so I knew exactly where I was. Glen passed me on the way in to 6. His Brown X wasn't much different from 6: #1 and 2 were slightly different, and X had an extra control between my 3 and 4, but the remainder was identical.

I was happy with execution on the rest, though my speed is atrocious, but I finished 2nd in F65 for the day (5th yesterday). I was pretty sure Janet F and Sandy had 1-2 sewn up for the 2-day total, but didn't have good enough math skills to do the 2-day math difference between Lex and me, and figured she'd squeaked through for third place. At home, if I did the math right, I think I got her by 7 seconds. Whatever. :-)

Note

NOTE: I put my watch into lock mode after starting (thanks to Julie for the instructions!), to avoid any accidental turnoffs as happened yesterday. Only thing is, then I can't take manual splits. I'll save this for woods that might be trashy.

11 AM

Walking warm up/down 11:02 intensity: (5 @0) + (9:44 @1) + (1:13 @2) 0.71 km (15:35 / km)
ahr:95 max:109 shoes: 2022 VJ Falcon 6.5. GA

Back to the car from the clothing drop (which was not nearby the finish but down a trail, and I was getting chilled so we left the finish area earlier than we might have otherwise). We didn't wait around for awards but wanted to hit the road. Turns out the drive home wasn't too bad (because tomorrow's the past day of the holiday weekend).

Orienteering race (Brown Y) 1:38:05 [3] *** 3.68 km (26:39 / km) +118m 22:59 / km
spiked:4/7c (sick) shoes: 2022 VJ Falcon 6.5. GA

NEW NOTE: Time transferred to AP was 1:59:43(?!); time in my watch's history is 1:00:38, with an abbreviated track (somewhere between 1-2, restarted at #3, off briefly after the penultimate control). Time per download splits printout:
98:05
S-1 7:33
1-2 23:35
2-3 29:10 (major walkabout, not tracked)
3-4 15:39 (couldn't read contours or rocks; wandered too far uphill)
4-5 9:45 (wasn't on the small marsh I expected it to be on)
5-6 6:28
6-7 5:19
7-F 0:36

NOTE: Track is incomplete. Watch turned off twice while I was in the woods, and I didn't catch it right away. Even now, it has only registered ~2500 steps when I know I've gone over 10,000. Upper 40s to low 50s and sunny ehen not in the woods.

Masters Nationals day 1 at Bigelow Hollow SP in NE CT. Nominally 3.7 km, 70m climb.

Did fine S-1-2 and 5-6-7-F, but lost it in between. Couldn't navigate the area around 3 or 4, and 5 wasn't where I expected it, but saw it soon enough.

Cold (if that's what it is) still bothered me today. I dug out an old inhaler that I used a few times after a bad cold in early 2020, and used it before heading out this morning, and it helped me not cough up a lung, but didn't help get enough O2 to the brain, apparently. :-)

Node hunting in West Orange (while grands are at school). Missed a side road I'll need to return for, and found a few more things to edit in OSM.

My nose started streaming late Tuesday; I took Claritin this morning to slow it down a bit. I can't tell yet if it's a sudden attack of allergies, or a new cold...no sore throat or anything. Took it slow and easy.

Weather was beautiful...a remarkable change from the past few days. Sunny and in the 60s.

Running nose since Tuesday afternoon; took Claritin this morning but feeling sluggish.
