Who was registered for yesterday's rogaines

Results/Splits/Route Gadget links

I just noticed I didn't get credit for the second control I visited, #46...I never noticed yesterday when I picked up my splits printout. I probably had to wake up the control and didn't wait long enough for it to register. (Would have put me ahead of the Veterans Mixed team.) Whatever. :-)

After lunch we decided we wanted to go for a shake-out walk, but not close by. Leaser Lake sounded good, with birds and turtles to see, and the temperature was showing 72F. By the time we were ready clouds were covering most of the sky but we thought it would stay warm.

By the time we reached Leaser Lake the temp was down to 68, so I exchanged my short sleeves for long sleeves. And by the time we'd been out about 35 minutes light rain began to fall. It never got heavy so we kept on going, but then the wind picked up a bit so we headed back.

Saw Canada geese, tree swallows, RWB, sparrows, a cardinal, brown thrashers, robins, yellow-rumped warblers, and I think I saw an oriole--likely an orchard oriole. Also saw three painted turtles on a log, though by the time we headed back only one remained on the log.

Babcock Bog & Boulder Challenge in Gallitzin SF, about a half hour NW of Bedford, PA. Temps started near 50 at race time and rose to near 70 by the time we were done. Woods were mostly open (pretty good visibility) with no leaves out, but there are a lot of beech saplings to slow you down and throw branches in your face. Not too wet though I did manage to get one foot submerged in mud.

We were given two 11x17" maps which had a few inches of overlap in an area divided E-W by Rt 56; 1:15000 map, 5m contours, prepared by Jim Wolfe of WPOC, who set out 40 control points for the competitors (44 on 28 teams or solos registered on the 6-hour; 15 people on 12 teams on the 3-hour). Control number was the point value; total possible was 2260 pts with numbers 31-46, then 51-56, 61-66, 71-76, 81-86

I either spiked most of the controls or got within visual distance and turned to the control (i.e., not heading directly for it) on all but two controls, but they were 80+ pointers so worth pursuing. Missed 85 on the first attempt, missed again after relocating from the stream beyond it to the south (not well) and ran into Glen. Missed again with him so we both bailed to the trail to the east and came back at it and found it. Then Glen was headed elsewhere while I went on toward 86, a featured control (photo at start showed a "distinct" tree because it has a large rock/small boulder about 8-10' in the air supported by three or four trunks. I missed it on the first try and was relocating when another competitor came by and found it.

Managed 18 controls, 1013 points; good enough for first place (of two) in Women Veterans. I had originally intended to just stay out for 4:00 or so but felt fine at 3:30 so continued on the loop I'd planned and added a few more points because why not...I had six hours to get them and get in.

Order was:
35-46-72-51-85*-86-39-73-36-64-83-74-75-37-53-45-31-42-32-F
*This one should have big spaghetti lines on my track.
The 12th point, #74, I deliberately looped around for an easier and safer attack, though I knew it was longer than trying to go straight for it.

Looking for interesting birds at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus (a Northern parula has been reported there but I didn't see or hear it). Not much to be seen even at the bird blind, though I did see two woodpeckers and a white throated sparrow.

Mid 50s and windy for both of these outings.

Walking 51:51 intensity: (1:20 @0) + (23:24 @1) + (27:07 @2) 4.61 km (11:15 / km)

Cedar Creek Parkway in Allentown, checking out waterbirds on Lake Muhlenberg (didn't see anything unusual), and generally exploring the park. The park itself is pretty wide open and linear so probably wouldn't make a fun sprint venue. Playground looks like fun for the grandkids.
