Jogged to start from assembly area. Corinne and Dave had the epunch distribution under control so C said I could head off to orienteer. I found two potential start slots in Br X, one at 10:08, and the other at 10:20. I got there a few minutes before 10 so decided to ask for the 10:08 one (they were calling up 10:04). Said hi to my brother who called out the minutes both days. :-)

DVOA Big Woods NRE, day 2 at Coventry Woods; Brown X, 4.0 km, 100m(+?) climb. Today's courses were courtesy of Petr Hartman. Cooler today. Sunny early but then it clouded over; the temperature stayed consistently in the low 50s. Again, no rain.

Started at the same time as AJ Riley, who went down the trail and then cut through the woods across a couple of streams. It was the more direct route, but not easy to cross the streams, and then I got on the wrong trail (partly because I thought the fellow who started two minutes ahead was on the right one...tho' he was on a different course).

Any way, once I lost the trail and figured out I wasn't on the main trail I corrected and climbed to mine. Okay on the next one and then more climbing and rockiness to the 3rd so that took a while.

Didn't want to cross lots of rocks between 3 and 4 so dropped NE to a trail and looped around. Cut across part of the hill rather than dropping farther because I had features to use along the way. 4-5 was okay too.

Down the hill okay to #6 with Shawn F and Sue H-T off to my left (but both on the other Brown course). Sue was on the trail (after I left 6) ahead of me and had the same next control as I found out later, but we took different routes...I went high, she went low. Had Julie Keim (on Green) in sight to 7 and 8, then we took different routes out of the woods to 9 which was the last control.

As I exited the woods and I passed within 25' of my car parked in the last "meet worker" spot before out-of-bounds, I was amused when my watch said "transfer complete." It must have sensed my phone, even though cell reception wasn't really great there. All it would have transferred was my steps and perhaps my walk to start. :-D

Ended up 2nd in F65+, well behind Janet Findlay, and ahead of Keg Good who just moved up to the class this year.

Most folks had long drives and left before the awards ceremony, some having picked up their awards, which were medals with an image of the Big Woods event logo (and the originally planned 2020 date) on the front, and a sticker with the weekend's dates and the competitive class on the back.

DVOA NRE, day 1 at French Creek North. F65 was on the same course as F55 and F60 and F-18 (and M65-70-75), 4.6 km, 100m climb, designed by GlenT. And no, I had no inside information about any control locations.

Did pretty well for the most part considering this is classic bland hillside French Creek terrain with an abundance of old charcoal platforms in various states of pristine-ness or degradation. There were enough features on the routes to check things off and stay mostly on track.

A few places I had to veer left or right to go to the control, but I never wandered. Got tired by the end and fell once, but no damage.

Big thanks to everyone on the setting/vetting/pick-up and other teams for all their work today. We had amazing weather today, temps in low 70s with some sunshine, and the rain showers held off until after dinner (I don't think we got the big weather front push-through and certainly no thunderstorms, though I saw a bit of lightning to the south while we were chatting with orienteers in the motel breakfast room).

Had dinner at a very nice place in downtown Boyertown called Grind, which specializes in ground meats shaped into meatballs and served various ways. (We had seafood/fish.)

Picked up 4 controls close in the finish area that hadn't been assigned to other volunteers (and there were many!). And a plastic bag (someone else's old trash, near the camping loop) to toss in the trash.

It was a nice day and the next few days are rest days (as far as exercise) so I got out to the park and around the neighborhood. Mid 60s ... short sleeves!
