Orienteering race 28:27 [4] ***
spiked:23/24c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

DVOA sprints at Fort Washington park, temps in low to mid 70s throughout and dry...nice for running!

No track because I forgot to start my watch.

Sprint #2 first; 1.8 km straight line, 43m climb; but needed some running around on trails because vegetation was prickly. All of this sprint was contained in the area between the two parking areas, and bounded by the one-way park road on the south.

I borrowed an SI Air stick (because it's faster to "punch" at controls). This course had a taste of the micro-sprint course with a series of controls in the picnic area. Lots of people were playing disc golf in the area when I went through! Hope I didn't distract anyone.

Messed up to #1 trying to read and go through the light green, but it would have been better to run around, though even when I did that I didn't see it right away. Ugh. An almost 8 minute leg that should have been 3 at most. Good for the rest. Enjoyed the micro-sprint in the picnic area SE of #4 (next non-micro-sprint control was #20).

Sprint #1 at Fort Washington sprints, set by Karl Ahlswede and run with help of Greg A, Sandy A, and Sandy F. Nominally 2.4 km, 40m climb.

Did this after finishing Sprint 2, where I forgot to start my watch. For this one, I had cleared the borrowed SI Air stick, but neglected to "check" it so had to punch the normal way at each control. D'oh!

Bonus micro-sprint at Ft Washington...run to control at edge of picnic area with beaucoup de trees, navigate among them, and return to shared control then to the finish. Fun!
Nominally 1 km, 17m climb.

Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas. Looking for the (not well-signed) trail to look at petroglyphs.

Other 12:00 [1] 0.48 km (25:00 / km)

Finally found the trailhead and went to look at petroglyphs and petrographs on the rocks (on the *other* side of the wash).

(Edited time/distance because I forgot to stop my watch before we drove off.)

Taylor Creek Trail (middle fork) in Kolob Canyons area of Zion NP. Temp in 60s to start, probably low 70s when we finished.

Distance and climb probably from watch were bogus because we played around at the destination of the hike and beyond, so that's been corrected. Double Arch Alcove (huge!) is the official terminus, but if you go a bit farther there's a neat waterfall coming through a slot, about a 50' drop to the stream below. Nice hike. It sure helped to have my hiking poles along, though, to help with balance.

The trail criss-crossed the creek continuously, with stepping stones if you were patient enough to find them. We counted 50-52 creek crossings before reaching the Double Arch Alcove.

Timber Creek Overlook Trail at end of road in Kolob Canyons area of Zion.

Many sego lilies (state flower) near the trail, the only time we've seen any since we've been in Utah.

Rim and Fairyland Trails from the General Store to Tower Bridge (which really does look vaguely like the bridge at Tower of London), and back. We found a handy log near the bridge viewpoint to rest on and have a snack before returning.

Other stops were mostly for taking photos (or to catch my breath on the hike back up).

Breezier today but not so much down in the canyon. Temps in 70s.

Pretty accurate track today despite the canyons. Temps in upper 60s and into the 70s.

We took a shuttle bus to Bryce Canyon Point, and hiked from there to Sunrise Point, nominally 4.9 miles. Unfortunately the Navajo Trail that goes right by the Thor's Hammer hoodoo was closed, but we stopped by to see Queen Victoria before climbing back up to the rim trail at Sunrise Point. Took lots and lots of photos.

Bristlecone Point trail from Rainbow Point parking area to Yovimpa Point lookout and back to car. Forgot to look from Rainbow Point. A bit cooler (upper 60s) at this higher elevation.

Started to head up toward Inspiration Point from near Sunset Point, but then thought better of it and came back along the rim trail, around sunset.
