Flying Pig XXIII, day two of *2018* Masters Nationals (two-day classic). Partly sunny, low to mid 40s, much like yesterday but into the 50s later so great for hanging around at the finish. I was one of the first starters on Brown A.

Brown A, F65, 3.3 km, 180m climb nominal; 1:7500 / 5m. Kiser Hollow map at Carter Caves Resort State Park.

Happy with all my routes except for being sloppy to #2, a pit (in a line of pits) on a broad spur, approached from the opposite side of the spur or at an angle. I did not approach the challenge properly as I didn't pace count until my second try. I guess my first thought was that I'd get to the flat part of the spur and find the first pit and work my way to the third, but it didn't happen that way. Relocated from a control on a ditch bend (first time I passed it I thought it was the ditch end/top and that I was higher on the hill than I really was), and still overshot it on my pace count but knew to stop, turn back, and head a bit higher on the hill. I found the fourth pit in the line so knew I was now at the right level, and then I saw two other Brown A runners going to the proper pit. AP says 6:30 minutes lost (it also gives me an "error" on the run-in but always does that...I don't sprint very fast), so a time in the 54-55 minute range was possible.

Good enough for first place, though, with my sister Nancy (close behind on day 2) in second! (Ruth B, who ages up for 2019, was 3rd followed by Leslie M. and someone from OLOU). I checked my log from the last Carter Caves event in 2015 and my F60 competitors included Sandy, Janet F, Sue H-T and Natalia D, none of whom attended this year.

Mary Jo, you would have loved it!

Thanks to all in OCIN for another well-organized and executed Flying Pig!

To start. Sunny and chilly...upper 30's.

Scenic route that took us under huge cliffs E of the main lodge (Glen and I had hiked some of this trail when we were here in 2015).

Orienteering race 1:01:31 intensity: (17 @1) + (1:53 @2) + (10:19 @3) + (32:23 @4) + (16:39 @5) *** 3.91 km (15:44 / km) +172m 12:53 / km

Flying Pig XXIII, day one of 2018 Masters Nationals (two-day classic). Sunny, and low to mid 40s, feeling colder in the shaded valleys.

Brown A, F65 (shorter course than for F55-60), 3.3 km, 175m climb nominal; 1:7500 / 5m. Raven Bridge map at Carter Caves State Park.

No issues finding the controls. A couple of route choices that could have been better and faster (stay on trail longer to 1; contour around spur to 4 instead of climbing almost to the top of the hlll), but I was happy with the rest. 7th or 8th on Brown A (M-Brown open had some faster men running down a course; and the fast folks on M70 and M75).

EDIT: I think some of the heart rate data is bogus. Maybe I'll wear a chest strap tomorrow and see if there's much difference. (Garmin 235 with wrist-HR detection)

EDIT 2: Splits show my conservative route to 7 was slower than some. I was getting tired...

Middle Brown A at Camp McKee at the Flying Pig / 2018 Masters Champs
2.8 km, 130m climb (1:10000/5m map).

Uncertain in the circle at 1 (~1 min?) and misread control description at 8 (1:30) but otherwise found them well. Some I think were yellowish level, but I think courses were restrained by the terrain around the camp.

5th on Brown A, maybe? (behind 4 M75s and an M70).
