Orienteering race (Short sprint) 36:51 [4] 3.06 km (12:03 / km) +84m 10:36 / km

Short "spriddle" at Cemetery Hill, Northampton, MA, 1st event in the New England Challenge and Sprint Series. We'll see how many of these we get to. SL 2.5 km, 70m climb

Okay though I don't move fast, but much faster than I thought a week ago I'd be doing at this point. Any hill was a trudge. Downhills were okay until the leg across the field at 10-11 where my right knee started to ache, so I slowed down just a bit.

To 10 I went through the woods instead of around in the field (which was probably better) and was slightly off line but not too far and I had someone else nearby to help pinpoint the flag. Slow finding the spring and flag at 14. People kept catching and passing me, but I ended up 2nd woman, almost 10 minutes behind Evalin B.

Nice course by Phil B. We've orienteered here before so many areas were familiar but you still need to keep thinking. More folks did the short sprint vs the 3.8 km long course, knowing there was more to come.

Sprint final at Cemetery Hill, Northampton, MA. SL 2.6 km, 80m climb

This was a chase start event, so I started about 17 minutes behind Joe Brautigam who had been fastest on the earlier short course. Some different areas than earlier, and a different flow, to keep you thinking.

I observed folks starting out to see where they went and the route choice was identical for all so I went that way too; a fine way to start.

Knee achy throughout this race and after...blergh. The NSAID regimen is helping, however.

My race times were just 17 seconds apart at around 37 minutes each time, which is actually about the times I predicted before we even got to CH today.

Thanks again to Phil and his helpers (PG and Amy R and Jim Paschetto) for a fun way to spend a few hours and catch up with friends.

SW part of the Partridge Run map in West Berne. Green course, SL 4.9 km, no climb given

Started at the top of the hill so I knew I'd have to come back up at the end (trudge).

Course by Phil HT seemed more long-orange than advanced difficulty but I still had minor problems inside the circle on three points. One was a "dot knoll" which was almost invisible in the terrain and the flag was tucked down behind the 0.5m side of the rock bit that was sticking out of the ground (invisible from the other direction). Another was tucked into a crevice near the top of a cliff which I was approaching from below so I didn't see the flag until I circled around it. And one was due to tiredness and me seeing a distinct pine tree and not noticing that the circle for the one I wanted covered the first tree I found and the other was just a few meters away. Started after and finished before Sue, so I'm happy with that.

I should also clarify that even though I "spiked" number 4, the round-about route shown is because I thought I was headed to 5 after 3 before realizing I had to climb up another hill.

Fun crossing higher than mapped creeks and beaver-created wetlands (I didn't trust the beaver dams with high water on one side, so waded to my knees at one point). :-) Temp about 33F, sunny but breezy. My feet have thawed out now.

Pilates class 52:00 [1]

A class with no external tools, meaning body weight would come into play. Not too much of a problem (with modified push-ups).

Testing out new Saucony shoes. Will need to try them again before making a decision. Happy with my mile times.
