Orienteering race (sprint) 25:26 [4] *** 2.1 km (12:07 / km) +63m 10:32 / km
spiked:18/20c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

England-Idlewild map, Burlington, KY. Temp about 50, cloudy

Ran F21/Red. No sense running Brown/Green sprints as I'm not a runner. So my philosophy is just run the slightly longer one and get more practice.

I was an early starter; the first control at a field edge had the wrong code; another control 40 meters away (and on the opposite side of the road(!) had my code; I punched both. Lost about 30-40 seconds in bafflement. So split to 2 is actually from the tree control to the SW. Fixed for later runners. Small time loss for me so didn't bother to protest.

Good through 7, then bobbled the exit to 8 and took the long way around.... Slipped on hill between 14-15 and got muddy but not hurt. Fun. :-) No FR.

Orienteering race (middle) 1:12:12 [4] *** 3.8 km (19:00 / km) +130m 16:13 / km
spiked:16/21c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Ugh. Last in F50; I can do better and will try to do so tomorrow.

Good starting out and through 8. Glen caught me around 6 but then had errors on the next two and passed me again to 9 where I was confused by the vegetation in the field. This is also where I stopped checking my compass consistently so something to work on tomorrow. Misread veg to 10 (1-2 min), okay to 11, disaster to 12 with a lousy plan. The FR will show the sad story (relocated twice from trail to east). Good to 13 despite lack of white woods where mapped so I used light green instead. Lousy plan again to 19 and 20 got me stuck where I shouldn't have been.

Tomorrow: plan, compass, keep head in the game. Forecast high temp of 75 tomorrow but only 50s early.

EDIT: Added FR data. 5.679 km / 116 m climb

Orienteering race (middle) 1:19:00 [4] *** 4.2 km (18:49 / km) +210m 15:03 / km

Green course 5
F50 at the Flying Pig. This is a middle course?? Leg from 11-12 climbed almost 50 meters in 0.35 km--totally unnecessary on a middle course. (I think skipping 12 and 13 and going from 11-14 would have been just fine and probably resulted in times close to targeted winning times.)

That said, I managed to have a pretty decent run through #8, though I was a bit left to 3 and went slowly on the trail. Misread map near 9 and unnecessarily checked out a Brown course control. Then managed to follow the wrong ditch toward 11 and was headed back to the trail to re-attack when I saw it. Linear Ice, who started 4 minutes back, finally caught me here and looked strong on the climb.

Sore legs, tired body. We'll see what tomorrow's two races bring!

Used FR with displays all set to just time and laps, no distance or map info easily viewed without a lot of button pushing, and I was never tempted. Data when we get back home.

EDIT: Added FR data, 5.54 km/183m climb

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using rings, so...lunges--yeouch! Right calf needed much extra stretching. Hips tight from yesterday's class so I skipped any running or elliptical after.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (erging) 5:04 [1]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

1000m
Hadn't done this in a little while so had to remind myself of form.
Also, 12@62.5lb pulldowns (no adductors)

Walking (indoor track) 14:27 [3] 1.0 mi (14:27 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

And a mile on the track, inside ("walking") lane with some deviations to the middle one to bypass other walkers. Thought I'd do the second half mile a bit faster but was 5 seconds slower.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Got a lot of leg work done, but not much balance, which I need to remember to do on my own.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

We used bands. Fortunately not much time on knees (which have hurt since last week--maybe from amprevious Pilates class?). Can feel in my right shoulder so must have held the reverse plank (modified, even) too long.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 45:00 [3]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Same program as usual; stuck it out for the while time listening to WWDTM from a couple weeks ago. 2.05 mi

Then 2x12@70 adductors, and 1x12@62.5 lb pulldowns, and extra stretching.

Good, productive club meeting tonight discussing volunteers for Billygoat and plans for an A meet next spring.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Room was cold to start but we got warmed up well. Nice class.

Orienteering race ("pink" course) 1:18:51 [4] *** 5.4 km (14:36 / km) +198m 12:20 / km
spiked:16/18c slept:7.0 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

WCOC at Ansonia, put on by Marie and Mike, who kept the fire burning.

They ran out of green course maps by the time we registered, so Lyn and I talked Marie into letting us do the red course (plenty of those maps) and just cut off the northern legs and butterfly. We followed Red through #10, then headed to 18 and followed the rest of the course from there. Good compromise, maybe just a bit longer than the green (I'll have to measure it). On approach to 3 I hesitated and looked on the hill earlier (SE), but figured it out.

Nice time afterwards talking about the NC meet and the GPS issue with the Walkers and Gagarins. ;-)

EDIT: Added FR track, which measured my distance and climb as 6.299 km, 198m. I measured about 5.4 km for the straightline distance between features I visited, so a little bit longer than the originally designed green course.

Temp in the 40s and cloudy; only a few light sprinkles, but the woods were wet from earlier rains. Cold afterwards; not great weather for just standing around in damp clothing.

SECOND EDIT: I changed the spikes to 16; took a roundabout route 5-6.
