At Moreau Lake State Park, US Classic Champs venue.
Distance is per Glen's FR (mine lost signal somewhere), and time is made up as we did some standing around and looking.
Glen wanted to field check some areas/trails at Moreau, and I tagged along for the workout and to be company. Saw some really neat areas (sorry I can't share the map!).
We'd had rain overnight, and some light showers and drizzle on the drive to Moreau, and were prepared to hike in the rain if we needed to, but it just stayed overcast and mid 60s. Trails were damp (and roots slippery). Long sleeves were a good idea to fend off all the mosquitoes! (I only saw/chased off one or two small deer flies.)
In one small area on and near a hillside trail we saw more than a dozen
red efts (which are really more orange than red; I didn't see too many spots but then again I didn't look that closely), from 1-2" long, so I was on the lookout after that to make sure I didn't smush any -- we saw many, many more (multiple dozens but maybe not 100). Lots of chipmunks running around the parking lot and under cars, probably looking for food that people drop since it's near the picnic/beach area... (We also saw a couple of chipmunks being 'romantic' in the middle of the lot!)
There was one super-steep (flagged but not blazed) trail we took that reminded me of slopes I refused to hike on 30+ years ago when we were just hikers (before discovering orienteering). Just put one foot in front of the other and keep moving and eventually you'll get there. :-)
The other reason I went was that Glen promised dinner at
Arizona Pizza in Clifton Park, where we'd stopped once before. The Florentine pizza was luscious!
