8 AM

Walking warm up/down 20:00 [1]
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Walk to start, with a hill climb ( but then it was mostly out of the way). Warm morning, had a bit of time at start to steady heart.
9 AM

Orienteering race (Brown middle) 47:55 [4] **** 3.1 km (15:27 / km) +90m 13:30 / km
spiked:9/11c slept:7.0 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Day 1 Brown. I read ahead on almost all controls, though I missed # 4 about 50-60m to the right and relocated off features 100m west. Then I made a dumb decision to drop to the road for the go control when I should have stayed high because of a 1+ contour climb back up. 1st in F55; a Swedish girl had more trouble with a couple of controls.

FR - 3.90 km
(added track)
1 PM

Orienteering race (O/B/G sprint) 20:10 [5] *** 2.0 km (10:05 / km) +65m 8:40 / km
spiked:14/15c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Sprint starting the tennis courts wsw of parking. Doing great (despite the partial distraction of knowing Sharon C started just a minute behind. Never saw her until after I finished...

BUT

I missed a control (mp). After a climb, I mistook an index contour for the leg connector line and missed number 13 of 15.

Comparing splits with Sharon I think I could have finished in the 21:15-21:30 range, which would have been great.

Tomorrow is another day.

Add FR track (2.33 recorded).

Note

Arm exercise? Mowed the lawn using the ready-for-the-season riding lawn tractor with new battery! Takes 1.5 hours to do the entire lawn.

Last year the first cut of the season took over 2 hours, partly because the tractor kept stalling out in tall grass. I don't know if it was the new oil filter installed last summer or the new battery but it purred right along today--thanks to my live-in mechanic!

Saw a turkey in the back field (beyond what we mow) yesterday and again this morning. Lots of goldfinches and cardinals at the feeder (need to use up this season's bird seed) plus a few red-wing blackbirds and a woodpecker or two. Haven't yet hung the hummingbird feeder - need to do that next week.

Also saw some tiny white flowers in amongst the other wildflowers (weeds to some) that grow in our lawn...they looked like miniature pansies with their central striations, but they're only about 1/4" across! Will have to investigate farther.

10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, using bands. Hard work on upper body.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 11:25 [3] 1.0 mi (11:25 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Watching Millionnaire. The first contestant won $100,000, and the second was on his way to $25,000 without having used any lifelines when I left. Smart cookies.

Running (track) intervals 20:50 intensity: (11:02 @2) + (9:48 @4) 1.78 mi (11:42 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Intervals on track at the Y. While my times were similar to last week, I didn't "feel" nearly as strong and smooth. Legs even felt wobbly at times, though I can't figure out why. Sometimes it's just different. So I only did 5 repeats (345m or 3 laps around, followed by ~2:00 recovery, or 2 laps around):

1:57 - 2:05
1:57 - 2:05
1:57 - 2:07
1:59 - 2:18 (stopped for some water)
1:58 - 2:26 (stopped to check my pulse after last interval, ~150)

I've been trying to run these with my shoulders back/chest high for additional air to the lungs (and running more on toes?); while it feels strange, I'm starting to get used to it.

Now, if I can just remember the right mantras for O this weekend...

Walking warm up/down 7:25 [2] 0.5 mi (14:50 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

On the track.

10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, using weights and balls. Roll-ups getting easy as is the pilates-100.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) 17:20 [3] 1.5 mi (11:33 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Run on the treadmill at the Y, trying to go about 3 miles. The treadmills at the end of the room that I normally go to were all busy so I used on at the other (older) end of the room, which tends to be warmer. No fans running, and I was getting hot, so I decided to walk after this distance.

Walking (treadmill) 14:48 [2] 1.0 mi (14:48 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Inclines between 2.5 and 5.5.

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 4:29 [1] 0.25 mi (17:57 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:11:42 [4] *** 4.4 km (16:18 / km) +130m 14:12 / km
spiked:11/12c slept:7.5 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Green course at DVOA meet at Governor Dick Park east of Harrisburg (we're in the area visiting my in-laws).

Pretty clean run if you don't count #2. This being PA, bearing and pace counting skills rank high and I wasn't quite ready. I think I was high on the hill and saw other charcoal platforms; saw flag at boulder 4 lines up and tried to reattack but missed; so I decided to go west towards developed area to relocate, which I did off a distinct house--success, finally. A 10 minute error, unfortunately. I was more careful with pacing on later legs.

Fastest time on course was about 41 min; Sandy F did ~61; my brother did 78.

[edited to add FR track; distance on watch -- 5.66 k]
