After another few hours at the quilt show on Friday afternoon, we supped together at a restaurant close to the motel and then hung out in the evening.

Saturday I took the train downtown with the two girls (i.e., under 50) who had come all the way from western Australia to meet us! They really wanted to see the Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park near the waterfront (or, as they called it, near the "Michigan Sea"), a.k.a. The Bean. Since we were passing the Willis Tower (Sears Tower) on the way we went up in that because where else in Chicago will you get such an overview? The Willis Tower now has the "SkyDeck" (which they advertise instead of "Willis Tower" or "Sears Tower") where the western windows had been replaced with pop-out clear boxes that you can step out into... Here's a Google images page... Lots of pictures taken.

We walked from there up Michigan Avenue as far as the Water Tower (northern extent of the Chicago Fire), passing an Apple store along the way. Now, these ladies wanted the latest Apple product, the iPad, and had looked at them in stores in San Francisco and Seattle (their previous stops) but neither store had what they wanted in stock. The Chicago store did, so they each purchased one! They'll be the talk of their towns as Australia isn't supposed to have them for sale until later in June.

Had to hoof it back to the train station to catch our scheduled train to NE Illinois to rendezvous with the other ladies for dinner at one of our group's house. We started at the station around 11:15 and returned by 2:35, but with stops along the way, I'm only counting some of it.

April 16-18 -- Rosemont Quilt show, Chicago area

Flew to Chicago Thursday morning to meet up with a number of other quilters (we eventually totalled 14) from all over to reunite and visit the IQF show in Rosemont. For those quilters out there (I know there are at least two who read my log) note that the Spring show is moving next year to Cincinnati, and the 2011 show will be Apr 8-10. Hmmm... I wonder if we could persuade OCIN to schedule the Flying Pig then?...

Anyway, went to the preview and had late dinner (pizza at 11 pm, anyone? :-) ... just like college days). The juried quilts are just jaw dropping, and I've never ever seen so many quilt and quilt-related vendors in one place in my life (program said over 475). I came home with a few trinkets and doodads but NO NEW FABRIC -- yay for me! And lots of pictures, the quilt portion of which are on Picasa. I add details later (title and maker) when I have a few minutes to spare. NOTE: these are the ones that appealed to me (machine quilting) -- there were lots of traditional quilts and other types too that I didn't photograph.

A couple of hours of wandering, but I didn't raise my heart rate any, so it can't count as exercvise.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Got there late so I got grief for that, but not much. :-) I've been being good about getting there on time or just after 9:30 even though we usually don't get started until 9:35 or later (I got there around 9:38).

Trouble with a new move, similar to "bench presses" (using weights while lying on a mat) but with palms/knuckles facing each other. Right shoulder was not happy.

Note

My sad route from Sunday. There's no excuse for my route from 3-4. None at all. If I had turned right (down the correct reentrant) from SSW of control 4 I would have saved 8 minutes of wandering right there and made it a 15 minute leg. Taking the low/trail route would probably have been more like 10-11 min, based on others' times.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. A couple of places were a little stiff and sore, less so after the class. Stretching very good, as always after a weekend of "O". Right shoulder a little sore from a fall I took yesterday; not as hard a fall as it could have been. I would NOT want to show off all my scratches to this crew; they'd think I'd fallen totally off my rocker (I think they already think I'm crazy for the part of orienteering they understand).
:-)
Jen (instructor) said she saw an article about Geocaching in the weekend newspaper. I said it was somewhat similar to O, but not really the same focus--good for families...

I should really enter a mix of intensities, because I was moving well on the legs I did find on, but not at all on the one I really messed up.

Started out fine; temperature was a little warmer than Saturday morning but still quite comfortable compared to mid day when it was close to 70F. Not really efficient crossing creek to first control but no trouble finding it. Next two controls good, too. Then I thought I'd be smart to 4 and try to stay close to the beeline. Not a good plan in retrospect as the "orange-ish" route would have been so much better not only physically but also navigationally, though it added 200m more distance (again in retrospect, not that much more on an almost 500m leg, though it looked "twice as far" to my eyes on the map). My leg to 4 took me 23 minutes (~45m/km!). Fran Armstrong who ran in F60 took the around route (which she described as orange-ish) and took about 12:30... (Jim Eagleton was fastest, in about 7:25. ...But, hey, I had the fastest split on #8 ! :/ )

Parallel features, too high, lost in the green; you name it, I did it. May this be the last big navigation mistake I make this year!

Recovered (for a bit) with a good leg to 5, then in my exuberance/wish to cancel out the mistake, I overran 6 and had to double back about 70m. No problem from there on in, just slow. Bleah.

Anyway, my legs are proudly wearing their badges of honor from 3 days of exposure to the rose thorns. I think in a year or three, some areas of this map will rival the Land of the Vikings in NE PA for gnarly green.

[added note - I need to delete point 11 - I think I restarted my watch briefly/accidentally after getting back to the car and that "leg" is still in there]
