Running (dirt) 1:21:00 [3] ** 4.1 mi (19:45 / mi) +130m 17:59 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Ran/walked the ridge trail at Stockbridge Mountain to the flagpole and back, starting from Olivia's Overlook in Lenox, MA. Narrow, rooty and rocky in places, with some blowdowns and puddles to pick my way around here and there. I'd been only partway down this trail last time I was here (when I ran/hiked the Charcoal Trail). I only took a couple wrong turns (even with a map in my hand!). Temps in upper 70s or low 80s and sunny but fairly clear.

Photo of the flagpole up on the ridge, and a couple views therefrom (is that a word?) ...

Walking hills (trails) 35:00 [1] 1.4 mi (25:00 / mi) +70m 21:38 / mi
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Stevens Glen trail (just downhill from Olivia's Overlook) with Glen. :-) It was muddier (especially crossing power line) than the last time I was here, in June. One of the bridges across a creek was covered with rocks up to 6" in diameter that had washed down in the recent heavy rains (streambed is about a foot deeper than it used to be, 50 meters uphill from the bridge), so the creek must have been pretty darn high! We were able to pick our way across safely (assuming the bridge would still hold the rocks) and get to the Glen, which was pretty impressive. Left the camera behind, or I would have documented the bridge as well as the waterfall.

Wiped mud off shoes in anticipation of dinner out at the Berkshire Brewery in Great Barrington (about 20 minutes or so from Lenox). Very nice beer, and decent food. We'd never been before but knew it was there. Liked the Berkshire Brown beer so much we brought a few bottles home to enjoy later.

Walking long (rogaine training) 1:52:53 [1] 5.6 mi (20:10 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked Route 66 from the church in Malden Bridge to "Kinyon's Canyon" campground which was reported to have stranded campers due to yesterday's heavy rains, according to the TV news. We received 4.3" in about 4 hours yesterday afternoon, then a break, then another 2.8" in the evening. That's about 2" more than the previous heavy rains I've measured.

Took my time, and my camera, to record the high waters in the Kinderhook Creek--highest it's ever been during our 29 years living here. (It qualifies for rogaine training due to the time on my feet.) My pictures are here:

One news report mentions the campers (near the end).

More rain (and flood warnings) in the forecast for tomorrow. Then a reprieve on Saturday.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Sticky, sticky, and warm (no A/C). One woman had to sit down for a few minutes after becoming light-headed. There was a light breeze, occasionally, and a fan or two, but otherwise it was rather warm. We kept things pretty low key (more strength, less cardio).

Inner thighs a bit sore from yesterday (pilates with ball, and adductor machine set at 75 lbs), but loosened up during exercise.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y -- yay, Mary is back! I enjoyed the session. We used the ball for many exercises, so I may feel it in my legs tomorrow. Or maybe any pains/tiredness will be because of...

Running (track) intervals (indoor track) 26:36 intensity: (14:42 @2) + (11:54 @4) 2.23 mi (11:56 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Indoor track at the Y, after a half-mile warm-up on the treadmill. I managed to pull off 6 repeats of 345m (3 times around) by mostly walking on the easy parts (2x around, between the hard intervals). Don't think I could have done any more, though. Times were 1:57 to 2:01 for the 345m sections, about what I was doing earlier in the year (last time I did intervals).

Running (track) warm up/down 12:31 [2] 1.0 mi (12:31 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

My warm up (actually, on the treadmill) and cool down (which included jogging and walking).

Note

Interesting local story about an attempted Great Blue Heron rescue.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Sweaty workout today, mostly because of the humidity. :-)

Orienteering race 1:23:57 [3] *** 4.8 km (17:29 / km)
spiked:8/11c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Green course at Hickory Run, set by Sandy (excellent course!). This would have been much easier in the early spring, but the woods were nicer than yesterday at PEEC. A little light rain at the start, and wet woods, but temperature was cooler (low-mid 70s) and bugs barely apparent, so a good day for orienteering.

Starting near the same time as Rob Wilkison; I let him go first and waited about 45 seconds until I started. Saw him again heading towards 5 (I hadn't yet found 4, didn't see it near him, and did the right thing by heading towards the nearby road to get relocated). However, I never saw him again, because I took a more creative route to 5. Because my glasses fogged up early I was only using the magnifier and had trouble seeing what was going on between 4 and 5 (stream with clumps of laurel/rhododendron nearby) -- couldn't tell if the stream bed was deep or not so plan was to loop somewhat right of the line to hit the stream further up where contour lines were more visible (not steep).

Between the thicker vegetation (mapped as light green, but this is full-blown summer foliage), and not seeing smaller details well I went even farther right of the line than I wanted, going as far north as # 7 (saw a bag, checked the code figuring if it was the right code I'd know exactly where I was, and it matched). Manage to bobble the approach from there, even, and went too far left, hitting the stream 100 m south of the control before getting my act together. No real problems from then on; had 4th fastest split to # 8 (of 20 on green) which was basically a follow-the-bearing control which I don't usually do as well on, so I'm happy about that. Saw #10 on my way to 2 so I knew what that looked like. Finished 7th of 20, about 7:30 behind Rob Wilkison and a good 33 min behind the leader (John Campbell), but relatively pleased with my effort.
