Orienteering race 1:15:34 [4] *** 6.05 km (12:29 / km) +141m 11:11 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

"Handicapped" race at Ansonia Nature Center designed by Boris G., with a mass start, designed to have everyone finish at about the same time. I wasted some time on #1 (found another course's #74 first and puzzled about where I was until I realized I needed to go over the next ridge), maybe a couple of minutes; and lots more time on #4 even though I was trying to be careful attacking from the trail bend (6-7 minutes lost). I was a bit off on compass, and spent too much time in the flat and never saw the trail that's shown west of there in the flatter section. Finally went to the reentrant (index contour) at the north end of the hill and figured out where I was. Saw Phil bouncing around on the hillside here too. So I could have been about 9-10 minutes faster, putting me closer to 60 minutes (but still just a bit over).

But I read ahead and had good route choices to all the rest, even though I wished the course ended with control 12 (150 m north of the finish).... I found the stepping stones across the creek southwest of the swamp before the last control, and kept my feet dry.

Temperature was in the low 40s; lots of sun and very little breeze near the shelter felt really nice. Good to catch up with Mary Jo and Lyn (and share my adventure of the day before).

Course was nominally 4.7 km. Thanks to Boris, Becks, and everyone involved in putting on a fine weekend of training events (even if I only did this one).
