Day 2 of Deschutes Daze, a mass start dogbones course at Lava Butte.
Definitely better than yesterday, though I could feel yesterday in my legs. As usual with mass starts I was surprised and demoralized by all the people who were passing me in the first few controls. I was already going too fast for a 6.5km course and there's no way my condition and extra padding were going to find another gear.
The crowd thinned out and for a while and I was by myself in the middle of the course. On the long leg to the 8th dogbone there emerged a bit of a pack of four of us. I found myself punching first by the second 8 but used up my last match doing so. The rest of the pack would get close each control, and I'd punch and think, "now they will all pass me", and then I would get to the next one, punch first, think, "ok, now they will all pass me" and it just never happened.
Fun to have a bit of a race like that! And the orienteering was fun, even if the undergrowth is a bit stiffer than ideal. Livelox
