This is the stuff I was looking forward to and it didn't disappoint.

We had a gimme for the first leg but even coming out of that one I thought to myself that some people were going to have a really hard time with the terrain and that I did not want to be one of them. That thought made me slow down and be very deliberate.

I was probably too hesitant for most of the legs but maybe it would have been unrealistic to have run any more aggressively than I did on this day. Running as I did it took me a long time to get into the map and there were only a few controls where I felt really confident. One bad control but it was a real doozie -- classic round feature departure direction mistake that cost me six minutes or so.

Ran into Spike heading out of the bad control and I had a rare experience of running with someone else for a little bit. Kept expecting one of us to find some afterburners and disappear but I guess we both left ours at home. Diverged when we had different controls.

The rest of the course went fine. I enjoyed the orienteering and it was definitely a long course for me despite not being that long. The more open kettle moraine stuff is more fun but I think this greener stuff makes for better championship courses. Would love to run in more of this stuff!

Nationals Sprint, F-35/Green-A

Made it to the meet site in time to pick up my packet, say hi to a bunch of people, and get ready to run the second sprint. I had meant to switch to F-21 if no one else signed up for F-35 but then when I realized I was only going to make the second one anyway I didn't bother trying to do that.

First control didn't require much thinking so my legs started trying to go fast and that just didn't feel good. (Probably the last time I ran fast like that was the sprints at WMOC in July!) Fortunately there was a little bit more thinking required for the next couple so I wasn't noticing so much the lack of higher gears or the jiggling belly. Just kidding, still noticed the latter.

Unfortunately, I got into woods mode on the fourth leg and blew past what should have been an easy control and wandered around in a bunch of stinging nettles for almost two (!) minutes. That tired me out so I was all good for the rest of the course, unable to run fast enough to screw anything up. Nice drop in splits placings after the long leg where I just ran out of gas completely.

Shortly after finishing I washed my legs with soap and water. I already had some hives from the nettles but washing seems to have fixed me all up.

Can't be happy about a sprint performance with such a big mistake even if the rest went well. Course was fine and I had fun (except for the nettles). I think this was also a new state for me! Didn't stick around after finishing as we could see the clouds and feel the wind. Snow was on the way!

Note

Finished up in Mechanicsburg at about 4:30, leaving 11 of 12 students ready to expand their programming careers. (Number 12 would need a *lot* more work.) Got as far as the outskirts of Toledo before stopping for the night. Determined that the plan had to be sleeping, driving safely, and missing the first sprint. There just weren't enough hours.

I'm in Mechanicsburg, PA all week for one of my jobs. Not much time to get out, though I did manage to go see Aly on Monday evening to extend WOGtober a bit. I feel like I'm coming down with something but I was also feeling very slug-like, staying inside one room all day every day, so I made use of the treadmill for a wee little bit of running.
