Ride in. Played leap frog with a bus. Lots of wind and stuff. Warm out, but not hot. Felt nice enough.

Ride home... think I got out the door just before midnight, so this still counts as yesterday. Tid bit nipply out but quite pleasant with a jacket. A jacket!

I eat a lot of junk when I have to sit at the ops desk. No peeps, of course, nothing quite that awful, but not exactly carrots and hummus all night.

Camp Sherman Classic day. This one didn't go as well, though I didn't really realize it until after I finished.

Today's course was Long in character, which meant more trail and road options and therefore less chaparral. Sort of. I managed to add chaparral to my course, just because it's been a while since I've given blood and I wanted to make sure October was taken care of.

I had a few small mistakes (made 1 and 10 harder than they were, blew by 12 because the veg didn't seem to match) and I was quite tired for the last few controls. My feet were torn up (old shoes seem to have shrunk?) and I was hobbling a bit for the second half of the course... but all of that didn't seem to add up to being so very much slower than everyone else.

The "highlight" of the day, and the source of my slowness, it turns out, was the big green hill. We had all anticipated having to climb this sucker the night before and had considered the options for going up and down. There were three apparently viable routes - one up a supposedly clear/forested streambed, one through supposedly mostly white forest, and one on a supposed trail. I had pretty much decided before I started that, given the bingo nature of getting through the vegetation, I'd take a trail option if it were viable.

There was indeed a trail option, slightly out of the way of the obvious route up the streambed. I didn't like the straight option because the vegetation is sketchy and I didn't want to have to clamber over rocks and pick through junk, which just seemed very slow and tiresome (hill is ~125m). I figured even with the extra distance and a bit of extra climb that the trail option was quite reasonable, especially since I was bound to move a lot faster. The trail turned out to be fairly unclear, and wasn't super fast, but I still figured I was making good uphill progress. That is, until I reached the top, mapped as scattered junk but in reality composed of large sections of solid junk. I have no idea how long it took me to hack across, but looking at the splits now I figure at least 10 or 12 minutes, given that it took me almost 7 on the way back to the next control. Ouch.

Frustrated with the colors on the map I decided to go back the way I'd come, figuring that it'd be easier to follow the trail on the way down having already used it once. It was slow. Clearly I took the worst route up and possibly a bad choice on the way down, too. The only thing is, looking at the map, it still seems like an okay choice - or maybe I'm crazy or destined to always make horrible route choices since I can't seem to tell which ones are ridiculously stupid. Had I known that the top of the hill would be so nasty I probably wouldn't have done it, but I don't feel that there's any way of knowing that from the map. I feel duped.

Middle distance day, though Clare made sure to give us our money's worth with slightly longer than advertised courses.

A pretty good run for me. The terrain was quite different than what I expected from the description and the photos on the website. Basically, it was way thicker and scratchier with a lot less woods. You know, better, only totally not. In case anyone was wondering whether or not chaparral makes for good running, I can offer up a very strong opinion that it does not.

The notes indicated that the courses started in the more technical part of the map, so I had it in my head to start nice and slow. And I did, but that's partially because I flipped the map over and went, "Woah, what's with all the green? And why are the lines so dark?". Squinting at the map, I made my way slowly to the first control, no issues. Tried to figure out the best way to pick a route through the chaparral on the way to 2 and 3 but never really figured it out. I don't think there's a real technique to it, you just have to be lucky and/or big and scratch resistant.

Had a few bobbles - went right by 6 because I was looking for a bigger feature than the little dip that it was in. Twelve was a real bitch, I don't think I actually screwed anything up, but it took forever to get there. Maybe would have been better to just go all the way around the bottom of the hill in the open-ish stuff. And by the time I got to the end of the course I was pretty beat, because I had expected to be out for 40-some minutes, not almost an hour, and had thus been running harder (a good thing!) and I started running towards 17 on the way to 16. But other than those few things (2 or 3 min total?) it was a solid run with a good result.

Jeff Coker blew everyone away in ~47, Paul Ort in ~56, then Tapio only 14 seconds ahead of me and Jan just over a minute behind me. So, 5th overall and first F-21+, which looked great in the results because the next three women were all Norwegian. How often is that going to happen?

I liked the way I felt for most of the course, actually reading the map in order to know what to expect ahead of me and then actually looking for it and actually running the right way. The map.

Excited for the LAOC meet this weekend. I think the courses will be a lot of fun... that's assuming smittyo's descriptions are accurate. ;-)

I had seabass pick me up at work so that we could squeeze in a trail run before dark. We went to the same trailhead as I did on Monday but ran different trails. I wonder if I'll be in Tucson long enough to run or hike every trail in the 4 surrounding mountain ranges... sounds like a good challenge, I guess I need a list (or a big map on the wall) to check off.

It was warmer than it has been (low 80s) but still really nice. Pretty uneventful except for the whole rattlesnake thing. I was running along and was only about three steps away from a totally not cute Diamondback sprawled on the side of the trail. My eyes recognized it right away but my brain hadn't quite fully processed what it was and given the "about face" order before it started rattling. Scared the bejeezus out of me and I swear I was facing the other way within .02 seconds. I ran back towards seabass and told her there was a rattlesnake ahead. She's never seen one, so we walked around in a direction that enabled us to get a better view from off the trail. It wasn't super big (maybe 3 feet long?) and, as I've said, not very cute, so it didn't have much going for it in life.

Just after we passed the snake seabass said, "I can't wait to read your log" followed almost immediately by, "Isn't it ridiculous that I was *with you* but still wanted to read about it in your log?" Yes, yes it is.

Home, approximately 13 hours after the first trip of the day. I was very tired and dehydrated during the flight today, and did some stupid things. I drank 2 liters of liquid (mostly water) after landing and still don't feel so great... but WOG will lift my spirits, I'm sure...

It did, it did! WOG was quite good today. Actually, it could have been quite a bummer - we can't use the baseball fields right now (the warning track around the four practice fields is our half mile track) and almost everyone ran the 10 mile race on Sunday... so almost everyone just did an easy run today. Luckily there were three others who wanted a tough workout.

We ran over to the bike path and just ran there instead of the dirt. Agenda:
warmup (~10 minutes)
strides (5?)
4x 1 mile with 2 min recovery
5 min easy
4x 1 min hard ("quick and light") + 1 min easy

Then Diane and I kept going to round it out at 10 miles. We ran most of the workout with Pete and Brigita (?), so we're adding to our posse.

Miles were 7:53 (easing into it), 7:36 (whoops), 7:41, and 7:34. The third one was really hard, partially because of the too fast second one, partially because of a nasty headwind, but mostly because we started at 8:00 pace and then picked it up to finish quite fast. Tough.

Diane is hoping to run sub 4:00 at the Tucson Marathon so that she can qualify for Boston. I think she came quite close last year (as in, within 40 seconds or something) and is determined to make it this time. With the miles she's running and the speed that she can do these workouts, I'd be surprised if she doesn't pull it off this year. It's motivating. Maybe someday I'll be motivated to actually do something crazy like run a marathon.
