Mountain biking 20:00 [1]

Redeemed myself by picking up 2 Vampire-O controls that had been left out overnight.

Green Day 2. After making a careless parallel error upon entering the timber-harvested zone, (leg 2 to 3), I bailed *way* out back to the road and came in again. Perhaps 23+ minutes elapsed between my two visits to control 2. Going carefully the 2nd time, paying attention to compass, pace count, and features en route, I got onto the correct spur and found #3. A couple other parallel errors. Marshes were extremely overgrown.

Encountered a group of 5 wild turkeys grazing along the road on the way from 2 to 3. This is the first time I've ever seen wild turkeys at Pawtuckaway.

Canoe-O at Pawtuckaway. I had some time Friday afternoon/Sat am to study the map and figure out a plan. In retrospect, a couple of decisions were stupid. I portaged from the canoe put-in to a control near the snack bar, and went into the water to my thighs getting into the boat. I thought I could make it back in under the hour limit, but my speed/distance estimation wasn't very accurate. There was wind, but I don't think that affected my speed. Ended up with 10 (out of 16) controls punched with 2 minutes of overtime penalty.

Paddled past several loons who hoo'ed at me.

Green day 1 on the Big Island. I got lucky a couple of times where I didn't deserve to, after losing contact. Gorgeous leg on the north side of the Island, where the slopes fall steeply to the adjacent marsh, and streams occasionally cross the contouring routes along the hillside.

Not dressed for the outing, I tried to collect a few Vampire-O controls for the Count and Countess. In spite of the spiffy headlamp I borrowed from Jim A., my land interpretation was not up to the dicey, watery terrain that the Count had people cross in order to reach a narrow spit of land on which he had placed a control. After finding only a few controls, I gave up for the day.

Asnebumskit Ridge trail from the South St trailhead to the other end, near the top of the hill, and back. Some jogging when it was flat or downhill. A lot more squishy footing than I expected. It's been a while since our last heavy rains here, but there were places where there was pooling water and muddy sections.

About 45 minutes up and 20 minutes down.
