Orienteering race 7:17:00 [2] 20.3 mi (21:32 / mi)
shoes: Falcon
No HR data because I left the strap at home. Overall good energy for about 5 hours. No cramps at all, thanks to 1000mg sodium in my broth at the beginning of the last loop. Took about 6 gels along the way, with various munching at food stops. I carried water with me, running dry going to 15, where I took about half a liter, then added more at the final map exchange.
For Surebridge north (1-9) (1h:45m) I ran in a pack of Peggy, Bernie, Nadim, Stina, Charlie, and a cadet, though i generally lagged. On the trail run they dropped me. (66:44 for the trail run split)
Crossing onto Rockhouse, I was delayed by about 20 motorcylces. Phil was a little ahead, and I could see Charlie's yellow top, but they were out of sight by the time I reached 11. I navigated the rest of this map solo, making little errors and a bigger error on 13. Ian passed me on the road to 19, where I discovered he had given us all a large head start. :) Time on Rockhouse about 2:20.
OK navigation on Sebago, although I made a poor route choice on the long leg to 25. I encountered Peggy, Bernie, Phil, and Nadim near the water stop east of Sebago Beach. They looked like they were moving pretty well. My poor route choice left me with 40m of slog through the rocky cliffside NW of 25. I encountered Dave Levine and the indomitable Sharon Crawford at 25, and we stuck together for the 2nd half of the loop. Group navigation was much more reliable as we generally stayed in excellent contact and found the features without worry. One bobble leaving 31 where we missed the trail heading east from the powerline junction and went down to the road SE instead of more directly to the NE.
Total time on Sebago about 2:05. Total time about 7:17.
