Orienteering race 43:41 [4] 2.79 km (15:39 / km) +70m 13:55 / km

Beaver Brook.

Orienteering race 36:57 [4] 2.38 km (15:32 / km) +70m 13:32 / km

HB High School.

After the race, I chatted with one of the women there for the car show. She asked what we were doing. I showed her the map, said there was a cluster of maps in the town, an active club in the area, and great times in the woods.

I think by and large each group looked at the other one with thoughts like "Will you get a load of *those* weirdos?" One group sweaty and wearing funny clothes, the other group obsessively cleaning glass windows and buffing hubcaps of their muscle cars.

My worst leg of the day. Could not get into the 1:3000 scale. I've been on the map once a long while back, but I had problems, even running off the west edge of the map on #11. I began this stage with my backup compass (with the air bubble in it), stopping by my car on the way to #10 to get the main compass. Still, I made serious mistakes on leg 3, leg 7, leg 8 (big one), and 11. Not good.

Orienteering race 54:10 [4] 2.99 km (18:07 / km) +70m 16:13 / km

Only 2 major errors, on leg 4 and leg 9. Still, not concentrating uniformly well.

Orienteering race 29:49 [5] 2.78 km (10:44 / km) +100m 9:05 / km

Mass start. I think the navigation began around leg 4. Got sloppy on leg 7 as I exited the orchard. I went WSW from #6, then through the open almost over the top of the hill, but I expected the cairn to be farther into the forest.

I was with Aims from 12 to 13, but I cut in sooner and punched first. To 14, he angled up but I ran around, so he punched first. In the 2 seconds (it seemed) that I took to punch 14, he disappeared, and when I next saw him on the sprint to the finish, he was halfway there. He said he heard footsteps, but I was so far behind him that it couldn't have been me.

Pete and Lex put on an excellent serious of events. It was great fun.
