Orienteering long 1:40:18 [3] **** 14.66 km (6:51 / km) +350m 6:07 / km

Team trials Long! Put together a decent run on the day. Long drive squished in the back seat of the rental and some troubles finding a good sleeping position on Robbie's fold out the night before had me starting the race feeling like an old man. Quickly felt better once warmed up though and was especially pleased with my physicality on the second half of the course. Conserving energy on these 90+ min longs has been working out for me.

A few interesting observations from the race! Tracking Winsplits

Oddly I lost 5 min between controls 5 through 8. To five and leaving five I should have been more aggressive attacking the hills to and out of the control instead of going around so much. Then Brent's RC to six was substantially faster, the boggy swamps are slow but flat, something to consider next time.

To seven my RC was good but got burned the last 100m into the contol. Excatly half of the guys running the course got burned on that one, a sign there might be other things going on there. Lesson there is that kind of precision orienteering takes extra confidence when running on old fassioned maps. Just gotta trust in your line and you'll get there eventually.

Finally I think I was just a bit flustered after #7 and bailed to the trail a little to aggressively. Brent's line is much faster, working the elevation by sidehilling down.

The long RC to #9 was probably the best long RC I've ever spotted. Spent 90 seconds in the circle to pick right along the lake but somehow I still took the fastest split! Need to do some serious geeking out to cut that time down but super happy about that leg!

Remainder of the course was strong but need to compass more leaving trails, especially towards end of course.

Some 7:30 of time that could be cleaned up! A good race, lot's of room for improvement.
