Orienteering long 1:17:42 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (47:42 @3) *** 12.0 km (6:29 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X Talons

Ran Magnus's course after realizing M21E would involve some 18 km's of mostly trail running. M35 was just right. Now I can appreciate what the boys will be running tomorrow. Could be really tricky when the pack decides to hit any of the green stuff... it will be easy to get tripped up or loose your direction. With so many trails about I imagine the pace is going to be dangerously fast, especially in and out of the controls.

Time to rest up for O-Ringen.

Rough first half then smartened up and finished strong. Fastest NA time despite problems must have been a bad day for everyone. Just made the top half. Aiming a lot higher for tomorrow. Results

Pre-race went great. At the start I felt completely prepared. When I flipped over the map and was confronted with the first leg I was relieved. I immediately knew what I needed to do. Then as I was following my compass down the line I hit an unmarked cut line in the direction of my control. This by itself shouldn't have been a problem but I was simultaneously fighting the forces of the two other guys who had started with me. Eventually the cut line ended at a reentrant that I had a hunch was the direction I needed to go. But my confidence had been shattered and I failed to diverge. The guy I was with found his control and I was left in the dust to relocate. After a minute I knew my race was toast and reset. Found my control right away and cranked the pace up again.

I ran as best I could, unfortunately today that wasn't very good. I wasn't ready to run a PB but tried anyway on the chance I could keep it together. If I was running any other race I would have slowed down and focused on keeping it together. But my plan was to go for it and so I was forced to redline and unsurprisingly lost it. After a string of mindless errors I slowed down and ran a clean race into the finish.

I know how to have an amazing race. At this level every little detail counts and there were a few details I missed. The Middle Quali is done but my races are far from over.

Ran the coaches race after the JWOC relay. Bit of a cross country run. Happy with how the legs handled the climb.

shoes: Inov-8 Oroc

Super fun spectator race after the Middle final. Ultra fast forest, not even any branches to jump over. 100% visibility. Ran pretty much full out from beginning to end. Happy I managed to run an almost perfect race without control descriptions. Organizers bizarrely had them at the arena instead of the start. Nothing on the map either so I couldn't check the codes. Wasn't catching the guy in first.

Note

Sliced my finger pretty bad while cutting up a melon. 4 stitches later I'm doing ok but this is going to set me back the next couple of days.

Orienteering (Relay) 40:53 [3] **** 6.2 km (6:36 / km) +190m 5:43 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X Talons

Started the relay in literally last place. Ran a wicked race, easily my best international run. I came 15th out of 33 on my leg of the relay. I've never made the top half before. Moved our team up five or six spots. I was entirely alone from start to finish. It was a near perfect run, a few small hesitations but no real errors. I am really happy I finally put a good race together this week. Great to end on a strong note!

Mixed thoughts about this one. Made some really bad mistakes but had some really good sections too. Going into this race I wasn't sure if I would be able to handle the terrain. In retrospect the orienteering is actually quite simple if you're smart about your approach and minimize the risks... strategy for tomorrow.

Light run through the warm-up map. Sun was starting to really heat up.

Will's MapKiller long. Lots of technical route choice with long trail runs over and around giant continental hills. Avoided any bad routes but could really use more training in this department. Lost contact chasing a Hungarian to #4 and missed my hill eventually getting dumped into a messy area of farmland. Took 3 minutes to relocate, lost 5 minutes in total. Rooky mistake and frustrating so early. Spent 3 minutes planning routes at #1 and that much again at #17. Was really nervous about these but I think I was too careful in the end, wasting time when I should have been running. Botched the big butterfly loop, spiked the little one. The sun was probably taking its tole at that point but weathered on, farely successfully until the end. Another 3 minutes lost on the last two controls but needed to be on the ball to avoid these.

100 minutes was for sure possible but I need to buckle down on my staying in contact, stop running wild. I'm ok with my result. First international race in two years and 20 spots up from my long race at WUOC 2010.Winsplits
