Cycling race 1:10:00 [5]

Supburbocross 5!

Always one of my favorite nights of the year. The biggest field yet arrived at 7PM to don lights and attack a 22 mile course with 9 checkpoints throughout the greater Minnetonka area. This was the 5th race, I had won the previous two races. Right away I knew my title was in jeopardy as I confirmed with Brandon Manske that the CAT 1 sprinter from team Grandstay Hotels was in attendance.

Lining up at the starting line, I saw that I was done for, the grandstay guy was in attendance on a CX bike, Kevin from Freewheel (the owner, awesome guy and SUPER fast), the manimal, a few CAT 3 roadies, Biz, Andrew Kroese, and top leadville riders Chad Milner, Dan Dittmer, Alan Eastlund and Ben Johnson -- the field was very strong.

We started out going 80%, at least for me, with Grandstay off the front, no one able to even draft him, d'oh! As we climbed man hill (unrideable, a forced hike-a-bike) I came over the top in 3rd with Biz right beside me. Our plan was to ride together.

Flying through the cool night air in a group of about 5, watching for cars on mostly empty streets, the adrenaline flows. It's even more fun racing on home turf. Whether the people are more friendly and consciousness out there or whether it only feels that way because I know where they came from, I can't tell, but I always have a good feeling out in the western burbs. More hills and lakes and parks and nooks and crannies than the burbs elsewhere which feel comparatively shallow and harsh.

At the halfway point I was feeling great, stronger than even the last two races. We had dropped Andrew Kroese, dittmer, Eastlund, Kevin, and some others. Milner was barely hanging on, getting dropped and catching back up back and forth.

At the mandatory Coors Light/Mountain Dew slam, I chose the nectar again, looking for a little hydration as I was riding without a bottle. Grandstay, I noticed, hammered a beer. This animal could not be stopped.

We dropped the hammer down the rails to trail path at around 22 mph, circling around taking turns at the front. Then the Manimal was dropped. Biz said his cleat fell off of his shoe. We were down to 4 riders! Robbie (a CAT 3 roadie) Grandstay, and Biz and I.

Soon thereafter, Grandstay riding in first with me behing, he goes over his bars next to the tracks. I notice some large pieces of concrete and ask if he's ok and then BAM, I flip over my bars, nearly landing on top of him. There was a hidden wet log beneath the grasses next to the tracks. I had no chance.

That allowed Milner, a solo warrior on a mission, to catch back up. Congrats for him to keep riding and not fall back to the group behind him (Andrew, Dittmer, and others). So we're a group of 5.

Through the single track at Purgatory we are ramping up the pace, I'm at 100% now, the legs are tightening up. I'm anwhere from third to in the lead through the park.

Coming out the park I'm in the lead, and I ask Biz to lead me out for the sprint, as we had talked about before the race.

He lays down a stiff pace and I'm hurting just to stay on his wheel. He asks how far to the finish and I tell him about about a mile, all on the road. My legs are screaming and I have drool down my face and neck. My mouth is dry, my chin and upper lip covered in phlegm. No time to care though. With a bit less than a mile to go, crack! there goes Grandstay, with Robbie right on his wheel!

I accelerate to hop on their train and successfully get up to pace behind them. My heart is about to give out, and now Biz and Chad are dropped. The hill gets steeper and I'm in the pain cave. They open a 5 foot gap on me, then 7, then 10. I try to accelerate, but there is nothing left.

Then with 800 yard to go, Grandstay stands up and drops Robbie, no problem. Across the line, Grandstay wins, Robbie not far behind in second. Me in a distant third. Biz not far behind me in fourth.

What a rush. The race ended around 9, I could not fall asleep until 1AM.

Great afterparty at the Golden Nugget.

orienteering race 2:27:06 [4] 17.4 km (8:27 / km)

One of my favorite runs of the year. Really enjoyable to grind away on that map. Really nice to work through this map's detail without getting sliced up by painful undergrowth. Awesome job by Owen and MNOC.
