Yoga 22:00 [3]

Gym 20:00 [3]

Original Strength routine recommended by Tony Muffatti. Seems worthwhile.
9 AM

Hike 1:06:59 intensity: (5:51 @0) + (48:05 @1) + (10:17 @2) + (2:46 @3) 3.59 mi (18:40 / mi) +73m 17:34 / mi

11 AM

Note

Stroll out to the Big Down Marsh with John Rogers, who stopped by on his way from Waterbury, where Beth’s parents live, to Westfield State, where his daughter Maddie is a student. At the bridge we met a group of 4 on ATVs and dirt bikes, and observed that it only took the beavers 2 days to rebuild the dam that Zack had breached with the tractor.
4 PM

Gym 15:00 [3]

Another round of the original strength for warm up, then 2x10 back squats with 75, at which point Zack showed up and wanted to go for a walk, so we did. Probably enough squats for doing them the first time since January. I had stopped when we got so involved with Pilates, but I think I need to do them, so I'll get back to them.

Note

Zack and I stopped by at our friend Elaine’s house to see if Zack could take down a tree that had partially uprooted and got hung up in the crown of another tree. Zack didn’t like the proximity to her house, and decided he was not the right guy to help her. While we were there a large coyote came across the wooded part of her yard, looked at us a bit and then scampered on his way. First one I’ve seen in several years. He was impressive.

Red course at Wolf Den. I did red because I figured all the cool guys would do it, but Phil and Steve outfoxed me and ran green.

Map and route

1. Good long climb on trail. Clint went by very easily. Saw the bag from the trail, but it didn’t look like it was at the foot of a 10m cliff from there, so just looked at it for a bit before going over to verify that it was in fact the right control.
2. Major fail trying to go on compass, ending up much farther to the west, hitting the trail. Could I really be there? Sadly, yes, so headed back east until I came to it.
3. Another failure.Headed right to it, but got sucked off to the north by some other cliffs and into some thick laurel, so had to extricate myself and start over.
4. Another compass fail. Around the W side of the big cliff, then thinking I was on compass, but stuck at the wrong thicket, too far up the hill. Eventually got there.
5. Planning to work my way to the E-W trail, but pushed around by laurel and rocks and ended up heading W to the N-S trail, then to the junction and relatively easy from there.
6. On trail past the marsh and up the hill. Passed by a couple of guys who had each passed me at least twice before, and stopped short, before slowly heading further up the hill and around the upper part of the green. The other guys were gone for good by then.
7. Seemed fine, but I went up a reentrant to the W of where I thought I was, so a few tense moments on top before I found the marsh and the flag.
8. Better, down the hill, around the marsh, across the knoll and down the side of the cliff. Spike
9. Another good one, on compass, saw the thicket, around and in.
10. On compass again, crossed the green stripe, under the cliffs, up the reentrant.
11. Could see the flag from a distance. The challenge here was to avoid green and marsh. I still managed to step on a rotten log which broke and sent my leg into a hole, but otherwise ok.
12. More or less straight, looked for cliffs along the way, picked up the trail for a bit, looked for #1 off to my right but missed it, then went to the cliff that was one higher, and when it wasn't there, knew to drop down. Nice cliff.
13. Just climb. Saw Judy K. near the control. It would have been Brown #2.
14. Out to the trail for a bit, then climbed just before the cliff and hit it right on.
15. Across stone wall to trail, then angled to woods road and across. Count the reentrants and stop at the stream. Easy enough.
16. Back out to the woods road. Thought I could cut through where the house and field are, but area closed, so just back past the finish and up the trail.
So lots of errors. Probably a good 20 minutes or so. But a fine course and a good time. Certainly nice to see everybody who was there.

Down to the bridge to see where Zack dug a hole in the beaver dam to get the water level down to a reasonable level. 2nd trip down today. Earlier we put a load of stone at the end of the bridge to fill the gap. Saw a pair of pileated woodpeckers cavorting nearby.

I had planned to go farther, but I hadn’t appreciated how cold it was when I was packing up to go, so I went out until I was about half as cold as I could stand, and then turned back. It would have been fine if I had the sense to be wearing tights and a jacket.

At the lake with Rhonda. Wood frogs in the marshy area at around 1.6 miles in.

West Simsbury. Slow, but reasonably comfortable, and I had promised myself I would be slow, anyway. Back and hip are reasonably jolly. I ascribe it to the pilates lessons.
8 PM

Note

Went down to the little pond to check on frogs. The peepers were fairly deafening, could hear them from the top of the hill. One rather low energy wood frog in the middle of it all.

Listening for frogs is not something I'm well adapted for. My tinnitus is somewhat higher pitched than the peepers, but just as insistent and only a little less loud.

Pilates TRX Suspend class, with Leah. Not as hard as yesterday. Still sore in the quads from yesterday. Not a surprise.
11 AM

Note

Booster #2. This turned out to be a little more involved than hoped. Rhonda had been at our doc's office and they just boosted her while she was there, told her to send me over. For some reason, they kept telling me they were almost ready for me, but it took 45 minutes to actually do it.

Note

Stroll down to the little pond to listen to frogs. A week or so ago it was all wood frogs. Today there were still a few, but about 90% peepers.
