Ward Pound Ridge Green Winter SeriesWoke up still pretty tired and achy from my garden adventures yesterday, but this was the last day for this so I decided to go anyway. Supposed to rain in the afternoon, so thought I would shoot for being done around 11:30. Didn't think far enough ahead that the rain was coming from the W, and consequently started around 10:30, but it didn't rain hard and was not a problem.
1. This was fine, followed the trail to the high ground then on compass, ended up on the ridge a little S, but could see the flag from there.
2. Fight through a bit of laurel, saw the stone walls to my left and followed the larger one to the trail near the jct, trail west to the bend and on compass. Easy.
3. Downhill, trail to the jct, then W on the trail to the stone wall, heading uphill on line, came to the likely looking rock, but didn't see a flag behind it, so continued uphill a few meters, looking around, and looking back to see the flag on my rock, but tucked in more to the W.
4. A little wobbly getting up there, but knew where I was going and no problem.
5. This was mostly fine. More or less on compass, hitting the small trail and then the larger one pretty much along the line, a few steps right on the big trail to go between the hill and the marsh, on line, continued up along the little stream, but somehow didn't register the contour lines under the circle, so thought the flag should be below the steep stuff. Wandered a bit, looking at various rocks, and then climbed some more without expecting much, and there it was. Probably about 2 minutes there.
6. Another unimpressive finish. L of the line to reduce a little climb, then across the reentrant, saw the dot knoll on the line and headed right for it when I decided that the next reentrant over looked promising and so went there and had to circle around the hill with all the cliffs to get back to the control. Another 2 minutes or maybe more.
7. Easy enough, down the reentrant, left of the pond and onto the hill across. The hills in front of the spur were pretty distinctive, so no problem.
8. Decided to go R of the big rocky hill in the middle, and the steep cliffs beyond it. L would have been better. Hit the trail a little N of where I wanted to be and had to wiggle around between marshes and cliffs to finally get over to the other side. Energy was flagging, so had a GU. The rest was pretty straightforward. Trail to past where it started to go downhill, and on compass to the prominent knoll.
9. Down to the stream, across the stone walls, aiming toward the end of the big cliff and to the smaller cliffs beyond. Surprised by a pair of pileated woodpeckers who came out from behind a rock just below the control.
F. Running faster on the trail. Felt hard to keep up. It would be good if I started doing a little running.
As it turned out, this felt pretty good, and while I was tired on the ride back, the whole experience resolved a lot of my stiffness from yesterday.
